Record breaking Aguero hits hat-trick as sublime City thrash Villa
12 Jan 2020
Chapter 1: What were the highlights of Manchester City's performance against Aston Villa?
What a performance from Manchester City. Riyad Mahrez got them off and running, dribbling through the Villa defence, and when they gave the ball away for 2-0, there seemed no way back. Aguero, three, his first of the afternoon. Thumping strike, and that was before half-time. A fourth from Gabriel Jesus, teed up delightfully by Kevin De Bruyne. Second half, same story.
Aguero dancing through again for his second. and then completing the route with his 12th Premier League hat-trick. One back for Villa at the end, but no consolation after that demolition nice moment with John Moss. The 12th Premier League match ball for Sergio Aguero in Riyad Mahrez with Patrick Davison.
Guys, well played. Man City in top gear, but Sergio, let's start with a special day for you. You've got the match ball. Do you know quite what you've achieved today in terms of records?
Yeah, I'm so happy for the record, but thank my teammates because they helped me in this nine years, so I'm so happy.
Chapter 2: How did Sergio Aguero break Premier League scoring records?
Let's start with that first record, going past Thierry Henry to be the top scoring non-English player in Premier League history, past a legend like that as well.
Yeah, no. It's just when I scored the second and then I think one more, I break the record, a hat-trick, no? That's right, yeah. So, no, I want to keep scoring more goals, but it all depends on my teammate. If he passes to me, it's fine.
I think he's saying you don't pass to him, Riyad.
I'm joking. I'm joking. No, we try to pass to each other, try to give the best solution for each other to have more chances to score. And that's what this team is about.
How good is he?
Well, the statistics speak for itself. He's a legend for this club, for the Premier League. He shows it and he shows it every week out and week in.

Chapter 3: What role did Riyad Mahrez play in the match?
very happy to have him in the team.
But as someone who supplies him, what is so good about him? If you were to pick one thing, the movement, is it the finish itself? What would it be?
Well, he has a lot of quality, but to be honest, he doesn't need a lot of chances to score. And this shows how big a striker he is.
Sergio, I think when you first came to England, we knew you were good. What perhaps is the surprise with these records is that you've stayed so long in England.
Why? I don't know, but... Have you stayed longer than you thought?
Done more than you thought?
No, normally I don't think how many years to be in one club, no? But when I came here, the club received me very well and then my teammate in that moment with Mancini. So I'm adapted very, very well, so I keep going now.

Chapter 4: How did Aguero's hat-trick impact his career milestones?
Which record means more, going past Shearer for the hat-tricks or going past Henry as the front player?
No, now I want to keep scoring, so just keep focus every game. I think... I will be happy if we do a good Champions League.
And I think, what, maybe 74 more goals to go past Shearer as the top Premier League scorer ever, of all of them?
OK, well, I will try. It's too far to Shearer, but him is... It's too much goal, so I don't know.
But maybe I will try. Well done. Well, thanks for doing the interview. You are also the Premier League man of the match. Riyad's going to present.
Spare hand. Now I'm heavier.

Chapter 5: What were the reactions from Aguero and his teammates after the match?
They are heavy, aren't they?
Good, good.
Well done. Thank you.
Cheers.
I'm surprised. I thought he would have known exactly how heavy they are. He must have had a few in his time. He certainly had plenty of records and here are some more. As you heard, he's now the highest scoring Premier League import we have ever seen, surpassing Thierry Henry today with his 177th Premier League goal was the hat-trick goal.
And he's also equalled Frank Lampard in the scoring charts as well. And he's now targeting those in front of him. Well, maybe Andy Cole could go before the end of this season. Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer, a little more work to do. But he has played, I think, over 200 games, fewer than Alan Shearer.

Chapter 6: How did the panel assess Aston Villa's performance?
His goals to game ratio is extraordinary and he's broken Alan Shearer's record for all-time Premier League hat-tricks as well with that 12th today and three beautiful goals to watch as well. How would you sum him up? How would you sum up what he's able to do that others can't?
I don't know, to be honest. I've never been able to score goals like that. What a guy, what a player, finisher. In regards to the questions that were asked to him, I don't think he thinks too hard about things like that. In regards to accolades, he just enjoys scoring goals. He's got that selfishness that you need as a striker to kind of warrant to score that level of goal.
Did you always see that in him?
Yeah, definitely. Tevez used to criticise him about his passing a little when we were there. The fact that his balls to the wider players' view always used to be a little bit wider, so they would have to cross it, so then he would get himself in the box. So in regards to that belief in his ability, he's always able to steady himself before he takes the shot.
I think you've seen it in his last goal then.

Chapter 7: What does Aguero's consistency say about his legacy in the Premier League?
As it comes to him, he composes himself so much until he nearly gets tackled, but he's so aware in what he's doing, it's ridiculous.
Was that what we saw today, Steph? That control when he gets in front of the post... that he knows exactly what he's going to do.
I think it's his timing of his execution of his shot. I think he always waits that little bit longer to steady himself. And then, I mean, this one here, it's just a powerful strike. And I think with the likes of De Bruyne, giving him crosses where he can finish, he's proved clinical. And this goal here, I think this is far too easy for Man City to play how they are.
Villa are not pressing, they're not dropping. And... I think in this moment here, this goal is a little bit of everything Aguero is about. He takes on his back foot, he studies himself, he holds off a few challenges and then to finish off that in the bottom corner just shows how clinical he is.
balance, Graham, isn't it?
Yeah, but you see here, you get from a different angle.

Chapter 8: What are the implications of this match for both teams moving forward?
I mean, he's ridden a couple of challenges there, goes through them. He's all powerful. And then at this point, he's only focused on the ball. He's not looked at the goal at any moment, but he knows where he is, sees the lines on the grass, and he guides it. He doesn't smash it, he just guides it. And then what he's got, he looks at an extremely powerful player.
They see when he gets into this situation. I mean, he gets there, he steadies himself. Little back lift, smash. So he's got power, but he's also got the timing. I mean, what... Villa will look at that and be embarrassed by that. Instead of himself, I mean, the goalkeeper gets his arms up when the ball's rolling down the back of the net.
He makes it look very easy, though, doesn't he?
Yeah, but there's... Like we pointed out in the first half, you know, things before he scores a goal, he's having to take a difficult ball out of his feet, the one that he chases to the byline and keeps it alive. You know, he does things that... Very few people can. And he does it in the most difficult area. You know, people are looking to leave a bit on him.
He's obviously a really powerful little man, but he's brave as well. He's got qualities that very, very few people have. He's got the eye for the goal. He's brave. He's got great technique. And yeah, you'd have to say as well, And he'd be the first to say, I think, that he's played with some outstanding midfield players that are getting the ball into him in the right areas.
De Bruyne, I think even you would... No, you wouldn't. Good players would score a goal playing with De Bruyne behind you and Silva, the other Silva. These are special players that thread balls through that lots of midfield players wouldn't get the ball to them. But he is an outstanding predator.
Do you think he's underrated in some senses? Despite all those records, do we talk about him in the same breath as some of those other great players?
No, I don't think they do. I think in terms of in the premiership, because we watch him week in, week out, I think we see how good he is. And I think I'd love to see him produce more goals in the Champions League status and potentially for City to go and win a trophy like that would really put him amongst some of the great strikers in Europe, if not the world. But I think we've seen him today.
He's got a bit of everything in the finish, right foot, left foot, heading. He just has a really good movement in the box.
