Chapter 1: What are the highlights of the Premier League action discussed?
Hi there, welcome to the Goals on Sunday podcast. Joining Cammie and I for our Christmas show this week is Mick McCarthy, Republic of Ireland manager. We talk all things about qualifying for the Euros 2020 and then of course look back at an extraordinary day in the Premier League. Enjoy. Lovely to have you here, Mick. Thanks, lads.
Chapter 2: How does Mick McCarthy feel about returning as the Republic of Ireland manager?
I'm glad to be here. Well, I'm glad you can make it. We were hoping you were going to come on a couple of weeks ago. Then, of course, everything changed and suddenly there was a bit of managerial coming and going.
I know. I tried to make a phone call to Chris without telling him I was actually getting the Ireland job, but it was pretty obvious.
Chapter 3: What challenges does Mick McCarthy face with the national team?
So I said, have you got it or not? Have you got it then? He said, yeah, yeah, that's why I can't come on. But it was great. He said, I'll come on as soon as I can and you have. Yeah, I'm delighted to be here. Thanks for having me.
And back at the Republic of Ireland in the helm of the national side, how are you feeling about the challenge ahead?
Chapter 4: What impact does Crystal Palace's performance have on the Premier League?
Oh, I'm delighted with it, yeah, of course, and really enthused and excited by the challenge ahead. Don't get them together until March. We've got no get-togethers, no friendlies. We've got one week before we start.
Chapter 5: How has Manchester City's recent performance affected their reputation?
We've got Gibraltar away and Georgia at home. But it'll be great to get back to doing this.
So great memories, I'm sure, of managing the national side. Great success you had as the manager, of course. You'll remember this game vividly. Yes, I do.
Chapter 6: What changes did Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bring to Manchester United?
Don't hit it.
Oh, great goal! Seriously, that was it. Oh, Maka, it was brilliant, Jase. He was an absolute star for me as well. I was just looking at the preamble there before and just seeing how bonkers we all are on the sidelines, how it affects you, you know, the wins, the defeats, the good things that happen, the bad things that happen, and how it's etched all over our face. Yeah.
And when you're out of it, do you reflect back on it or do you think, I've got to get back in, I've got to get back in, or do you think, oh, nice to have a little break?
Well, I enjoyed the break, I have to be honest. I did.
Chapter 7: What is the latest on Declan Rice's international future?
I'm delighted to be back in it, but it's not exactly being back in it. I'm not going to be on the sidelines on Boxing Day with all the rest of the lads and all jumping up and down, acting daft. I'll be... Well, I'll be watching it. I'll be going out to watch games. But I've certainly enjoyed the break.
Chapter 8: How does Mick McCarthy view the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers?
Yeah, I have. I'm looking forward to getting back.
Have the family enjoyed it?
March 23rd can't come quick enough for the games, I have to be honest.
Yeah, are the family similar? They say they enjoy having you around or is it a bit more like, right, can you go and find a job now? A bit of both.
Somebody once said to me, when you've jet washed the jet washer, it's time to go back to work.
LAUGHTER
And I've now done that on a couple of games.
All the jobs are done. Roll on the 23rd. I guess there's a different pace to being an international manager because, of course, you don't get the players as often as you'd like and when you do get them, it's suddenly very intense.
There is, yeah. I'm probably the right age to do it this time. I was 36 the last time I took it. You've not changed. No, I've changed. No, your eyes are getting older. LAUGHTER I went from being Millwall manager and being full-on and then to having this. In my period of five and a half, six years, I had 68 games, I think. Whereas, you know, it just comes thick and fast. Yeah, 40, 50 games a year.
