Yeah, I've been for a while, and I started this season, I officially announced it. But I've been happy with it. Have you been playing at all? Yeah, you go down and obviously play with your friends and a few charity games, but as far as obviously professionally and taking it really seriously, yeah, I'm completely finished now.
Have the legs gone then, do you reckon?
No, but in my body, it just didn't feel the same, and I think you know, I didn't want to keep... I mean, I've said to people before, I didn't want to slow down the process of these young guys coming up by trying to hang it out for as long as possible, so no, I thought I'd just... You're still young.
I played till I was 30, eh?
Yeah, but I think, but you know yourself sometimes, when you see some of these young kids running past you, it's like it's nothing, and I used to think I was quick, but when they're running past me like they are, I just knew that it was time to call it a day.
You're only 35, I was going to say. But are you enjoying the media career?
Yeah, it's gone pretty well, to be fair. Doing a lot of work and covering games. I think that's been the beauty and what's helped me retire is that I'm still part of it. I still get to talk about it, go and watch games, still speak to some of the guys who are playing. And that kind of softens the blow a little bit because I didn't want to get to a point where I finished and it's like, oh, what do you do next? So I kind of fell into it.
What led Darren Bent to officially retire from professional football?
And as I said, I'm really enjoying it.
Have you had to put the feelers out in terms of getting agent and what have you to get you the work?
No, to be fair. I kind of, because I had a big injury at the end when I was at Derby. So I started doing the media stuff then. And obviously when I then announced that it was official that I was going to retire, I kind of just kept doing what I was doing and I've been getting more work. And as I said, I've been really enjoying it. And obviously you have to put the feelers out of what you're comfortable with, what you're not, because obviously certain things, it's a different kind of skill, I think, to be able to talk in front of camera and talk in front of people. But as I said, I'm enjoying it.
But I always remember you from your Ipswich days through till the end of your career, that you were always one of those we could speak to, you know, in the media. And lots of players don't do that. They wait until they're finished and then they're, oh, I'm available now during their career. No, I'm not speaking to them. I'm going home. I'm doing this and doing that.
Yeah, I mean, and it's crazy because there's some of the guys now who are coming towards the end, and when I played with them, I would have said, like, they hated speaking, as you said, hated speaking to the media, didn't like interviews, wouldn't do anything.

Just felt uncomfortable with it, which I can fully understand, but now they're getting to a point where all of a sudden they're doing, they're everywhere, and I'm thinking, you weren't doing that when you were playing, but obviously, again, it's finding something to do and then finding something you're comfortable with, and you're finding the guys that weren't comfortable when they were playing are the best at it, they're really good at it now, whereas the guys you would have said, oh, they're definitely going to get out to the media, I haven't pursued it.
