What challenges did Erin Holland face on her journey to pregnancy?
Hello and welcome to Something to Talk About, the Stella podcast. I'm Sarah Lamarquent, your host, and every week I sit down with some of the biggest names in the country because when Australia's celebrities are ready to talk, they come to Something to Talk About. The road to motherhood has been anything but easy for Erin Holland. When she joined me in the Stella podcast studio in January, Erin was in the middle of a four-year fertility journey with her husband, Ben, and had just learned the latest in a long line of IVF transfers had failed. Now, just ahead of Mother's Day, she's back with an update and is ready to share some beautiful news.
It's so surreal to say that and this is actually the first time I've pretty much cried actually, probably because I'm actually saying it out loud to someone other than just our immediate family and my husband.
In today's episode of the Stella podcast, Erin opens up about how it took 20 rounds of IVF and the equivalent of a house deposit to get to this moment. The guilt and apprehension she feels in announcing her pregnancy. and how she and Ben plan to navigate their high-flying careers and unconventional living arrangements as they prepare for parenthood. Erin Holland, welcome back to the Stellar Podcast.
How did Erin feel when she announced her pregnancy?
Thank you. The last time you and I sat down was late last year in the Stellar Podcast studio. It's now May, it's coming up to Mother's Day, which is going to be appropriate for very obvious reasons. You have some news to share.
I do.
What financial and emotional toll did IVF take on Erin and Ben?
And I'm going to cry already. You've only taken me 30 seconds and here I am. But after 20 rounds of IVF, I am pregnant. And it feels so weird to say out loud.
Congratulations. Thank you. That just feels like such an insignificant word to say congratulations.
It needs to be like another level, I think, like above pregnant. It's like, oh, yeah, it's crazy. And, you know, we were just chatting before, but, you know, what a journey. It was not easy. To get here and I finally feel like now that we're over the halfway mark, it's never safe. But is it appropriate to say that I am, I still am, today I am pregnant? All of those adages that I think people who go through pregnancy loss and infertility really labour on. Yeah, as I said, 20 rounds by the time you add in five egg collections, seven transfers, four miscarriages, one ectopic, one round of chemo to save a tube, two hysteroscopies, two DNCs.
How does Erin navigate her career while preparing for motherhood?
countless council rounds as well and probably thousands of needles to be honest and I didn't want to think about another internal ultrasound for the rest of my life but yeah it's so surreal to say that and this is actually the first time I've pretty much cried actually probably because I'm actually saying it out loud to someone other than just our immediate family and my husband so thanks for allowing me to share that with Australia.
well i really wish i had something more profound to say congratulations but whatever that profound word is by a thousand we had such a huge response to your very generous interview and the candor with which you spoke about your fertility journey i know you've been very generous with your followers and and really generous with our audience I felt completely helpless. This is not about me but I just know I would have been a conduit for how so many people felt hearing your story and I'm sure you encounter that all the time. There were a few moments example where you said your fertility journey you were feeling quote like your face is pressed up against the glass of a club you so badly want to be a part of.
but no one is letting you in. How does a moment looking back on those words feel as we're sitting here about 23 weeks into this pregnancy?
To be honest, it still kind of feels like I haven't gotten in the club yet. I'm at the front of the line, but I haven't actually entered through yet. And I think I know enough to know that nothing is promised in fertility.
What emotions does Erin experience reflecting on her fertility journey?
And unfortunately, given the complications that I have as well, just with my own, still the way that my body physically is, the things that I've been fighting against in order to get to this point of pregnancy, I think until literally they come and I'm physically looking at them and it's a real tangible little bubble, I don't think it will
