What is the focus of this episode and why are cooking activities useful for speech‑language development?

Carrie Clark 0:00
Hey everybody, this is Kari Clark and you are listening to episode number 14 of the Speech and Language Kids podcast. This is the podcast with activities and resources for families of children with speech and language delays and disorders. Today, I'm going to be telling you about some cooking activities that you can do with your child to work on speech and language skills. And in the quick tip, I'll share a blog that's all about improving speech and language skills while eating healthy at the same time. First, let's start with some news and updates. For next episode of the podcast, I plan on having a parent questions episode, which means I need your questions. So email me some questions at speechandlanguagekids at gmail.com.

What are some things that you would like focused on? What are some things you're struggling with? And this could be parent questions. It can be from speech language pathologists that just need some extra ideas on a certain skill that they're working on with a kiddo. Whatever you've got, send it my way and I'll put an episode together based on the questions that I've got. Also in news and updates today, I want everyone to know I'm having a boy. We found out the gender of our baby. We're about halfway through, so we had our 20-week ultrasound, and everything looks good. He's healthy and has all his parts, I think. They told me he had all his parts. It just looked like, you know, blurry snow on the screen, but that's okay.
Carrie Clark 1:23
I'll believe them. So anyway, we're having a boy. Very excited. Anyway, let's move on to the feature segment. Okay, so cooking activities you can do with your kids. I love doing cooking activities, not only because you get to work on speech and language, but you do something super fun that most kids are totally into, and you have a great opportunity to expose them to healthy foods, healthy eating, teach them about cooking, which is really a life skill that they'll always be able to use. So cooking activities go great with speech and language work. So here are some of my ideas. how you can do this with your child. The first one I have is following a recipe. There's lots of recipes that you can use for kids that are what I like to call picture recipes and so these would be instead of you know think of a typical recipe it's got everything listed and then it has the steps written out instead of that you're gonna have the same format but there's gonna be pictures so maybe your ingredients list is going to be get out these things and

How can picture‑based recipes help children follow directions and practice reading?

Carrie Clark 2:24
And it's going to have pictures of all the different things that you need. Now, you should still have the words on there so that the children can practice their reading skills as well. But having the picture makes it a little more kid-friendly. And it also helps them with that comprehension piece, especially if they're having some language delays in there as well. So there's going to be pictures of all the ingredients. And then there's going to be pictures of each step of what to do. You can make your own of these. So you can take a simple recipe that you think your kid will enjoy making and you can just write out your own and draw little pictures next to it. If you're not very good at drawing, you can go onto Google image search is always a good one.
Carrie Clark 3:05
Search on there and see what pictures you can find for the steps that you're doing. So if it's pouring something in a bowl, you know, type in pouring or pouring batter or anything like that and see what comes up from there. I do know that that's a lot of work, though, to make your own recipes, so if you are looking for some that are already made for you, you can also go on to the Making Learning Fun website. I've put up a link on my website, so all you have to do is type in my website, www.speechandlanguagekids.com, slash picture-recipes, And that will take you to the picture recipes page for making learning fun. And that one has all kinds of different foods on there. They're separated by breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, I think.
Carrie Clark 3:52
And it'll take you on. You can find different foods that you're looking for and come up with some really basic recipes for those.
