Hey everybody, this is Keri Clark and you are listening to episode number 38 of the Speech and Language Kids podcast. This is the podcast with activities and resources for speech therapists and parents of children with speech and language delays. Today we are talking behaviors. So I have asked a behavior specialist to come on today. She is going to be talking to us about What to do when a child you're working with or your child at home is having inappropriate behaviors. And by that, I just mean anything that you don't want them to do. I'm not talking inappropriate as in perverted, but just inappropriate as in not okay. So if there are behaviors going on that are not okay, we're going to talk to you about how to figure out why those behaviors are happening and then what to do to fix them.

So I have a great interview for you today. I'm going to jump into that in just a second, but I did want to mention that after this interview, I went ahead and put together a couple resources for you that I think are gonna be incredibly helpful. They are some worksheets that will help you not only analyze the behavior and figure out all of the different details about what's going on. But then it will also give you ideas of replacement behavior. So what you can teach the child to do instead. And those are broken down based on the ability level of the child in terms of what kinds of communication skills he or she has. So I think this is going to be really helpful for you. Looking forward to it. Me too. I'm excited. I know that a lot of my listeners have been asking about behavior, so I think this is going to be a really good episode.

Okay, well, before we get started, could you go ahead and just tell us a little bit about you and your background and how you got to where you are today?

Karli Koning 2:15

Okay, so majority of my background is education. So I started out just as a general ed teacher. And when I was in the classroom that I kind of found that special education was more my cup of tea. So I went back to school and got certified within special education and master's in that. And then once I got more into that field, I was in a self-contained classroom. I started being more interested within behavior. And through that process, I learned about becoming a board certified behavioral analysis and started taking the classes and the steps towards that. I am currently now in the role of a special education teacher, but also as a behavioral specialist. Perfect. Yeah. And I'm a certified BCBA, which is a, yeah, international certifications through.

Yeah.

Okay. So how long have you been a behavioral analyst then?

Karli Koning 3:14

I've been practicing the science of behavior for the, about seven years. And I've been a certified behavioral analyst for a year and a half.

Okay. And you have a website too, is that correct?

Karli Koning 3:28

Perfect, okay. Well, let's jump right in with some good strategies that our listeners can use. So let's talk first about the ABC model of looking at behaviors. Can you tell us about that?

Yeah. So the ABC model, it's a three-tiered model, and it's a way of looking at them scientifically.

Today we are joined by Karli Koning from http://www.behaviorpc.com/ to talk about challenging behavior problems in children. Karli explains how to figure out the function of a child’s behavior and use that information to help correct it.Listen to the interview here or keep scrolling to view the notes: Show Notes: ABC Model of Looking at Behaviors Removes the emotional component of dealing with behaviors A: Antecedent: What happens before the behavior occurs B: Behavior: Look at the actions of the child C: Consequence: Anything that happens after or as a result of the behavior Choose one type of behavior or situation to collect data on at any one time Functions of Behaviors Try to analyze why the behavior happened Function is either to get something or avoid/escape something Interventions Come up with a replacement behavior that you can teach them that will give them a more appropriate way to communicate that need Change the environment so the behavior is less likely to occur Make the old behavior less effective (don’t respond to that) Reinforcement vs. Punishment Reinforcement will allow you to reinforce positive behaviors (the replacement behavior) whereas punishment applies a consequence for the old, inappropriate behavior There are some situations where punishment is necessary but you should always start by reinforcing the positive behavior and making the old behavior less effective Match the replacement behavior to the skill level of the child Get the Worksheets!
