In Ep.48 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, we are honoured to be joined by the highly respected Dr. Mark Laslett, New Zealand Board Registered Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Specialist (NZRPS). With a PhD based on his clinical research on the diagnostic accuracy of the clinical examination of patients with chronic low back pain, Mark has published over forty publications, including the first multi issue systematic review of diagnostic studies for the lumbar spine in 2017. In this episode, Mark guides us through the various explanations out there for SIJ pain, its diagnosis & treatment, and the difference between sacroiliac dysfunction and sacroiliac joint pain. WARNING: Many of the concepts traditionally taught with regards to the Sacroiliac joint and SIJ dysfunction are challenged in this episode. Dr. Laslett takes no prisoners as he reveals how many of the traditional ideas and assessment procedures still taught on many courses are highly unlikely to be doing what we believe they are. Though this can be frustrating to hear, it does NOT undermine our effectiveness as soft tissue therapists. In fact, it does the opposite - it gives us the tools to be even better at what we do, and evolve with current knowledge.
