It's also become a world capital specifically in the LGBTQ scene. Berlin is considered one of the most gay-friendly cities on earth for tourists.
It's got a thriving club scene, risque fetish festivals, and family-friendly parades. For a city that expunged much of its gay population under Nazi Germany, it has been a remarkable turnaround in the last decades. This weekend, Berliners celebrated their annual Pride Festival. Tens of thousands packed the streets. But that all came to a crashing halt as a vehicle slammed into a crowd. It quickly became apparent to police that this was intentional. And last night, after a sweeping manhunt, a suspect was apprehended, shot and killed.

So let's take you there now. ABC's foreign correspondent Britt Clennett is there in the center of Berlin. Britt, can you just break down what happened?
Right. So this was a pride event in the heart of Berlin. It was very joyful. There were music events. There was a lot of security. Police say that just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, the attacker drove a white van through what's known as Tiergarten Park. That's right alongside the Pride Parade route, and it slammed into a crowd before hitting a tree. Now, the driver then got out, according to authorities, He was armed with a machete. He began slashing at bystanders before fleeing.
We just heard a loud bang, so we definitely knew there had been a collision. And then we looked over and saw countless patrol cars driving past us.
One person was killed. Over two dozen were injured. Some sustained life-threatening injuries. And then this whole massive... manhunt began.
And so obviously then, I mean, between the person getting out, witnessed, you know, armed and swinging at people. So obviously authorities thought this was intentional. But did they get a sense of whether this was a hate crime or, you know, international terror or something? And how did the investigation unfold from there?
The German authorities say that all signs point towards this being an Islamist extremism attack. And when identifying the The suspect is 21-year-old Abdul B. They said he did have ties to Islamic State groups. Now, we know that he was arrested in Lebanon last year for trying to join Islamic State. That's according to prosecutors in Germany. So certainly this person has a history of criminal activity and links to those extreme groups.
What happened from there? Because, I mean, this person got on the loose for almost, I think, 24 hours until finally being caught by police. How did that manhunt end?
It was huge. And it involves, you know, monitoring the airports, the border crossings. You know, this would have been a huge, meticulous task to find this person in the end. This suspect was found or located in the west side of the city.
