Relatively easily and painlessly, they decided to have a state convention that met just a couple weeks after Plattner and his campaign imploded and he removed himself from the race.
And quickly, at the local level, people began to coalesce behind Troy Jackson, who is a lumberjack, a logger from the northernmost tip of the state, a longtime state lawmaker, former state senate president.
He's run for office a couple of times, including just recently this year for the Democratic primary for governor, came in third.
But he's a progressive.
He doesn't have the baggage, at least not now, that we know of that Graham Plattner does.
But he has a lot of the same policy positions.
And the Republican playbook might be pretty similar, just with a guy that might have a harder target to find for Republicans.
But he also has quite a hole to dig out of.
And Blattner and that campaign helped dig it.
And it's given Susan Collins a fundraising edge and maybe even a momentum edge as we head into this final 100 days.
Well, you know, Troy Jackson lacks what some Republicans are saying, Riz, the Riz factor that Grant Platner undoubtedly has.
Now, Susan Collins doesn't either.
That's not what she's known for.
She's really known as much more of a workhorse than a show horse.
But it'll be interesting because one thing Collins has been able to do is survive.
She's been winning for decades in Maine, even as the state has trended more Democratic.
And she hasn't done it in a flashy way.
So this is an intriguing matchup.
And it can't be more critical for Democrats, Brad.
They've got to pick up four Senate seats if they're going to take over control of the Senate.
