For years, President Trump's mantra has been America first. He described most foreign wars as mistakes. He expressed skepticism about international alliances like NATO and the United Nations, which meant predictably these big bodies were rather skeptical of him. In this term, though, President Trump has been much more willing, even eager, to engage in foreign conflicts. When it comes to, say, the war in Iran, European allies are concerned. But for much different reasons than his first term, you might wonder if they're now thinking, gosh, maybe America just isolating itself would have been fine compared to this. Which led to a strange scene yesterday at the annual UN General Assembly as President Trump publicly made the case for a foreign war in front of some very skeptical peers.

Mary, what do we hear from the President during this speech?
Well, look, Brad, he really spent a lot of these annual remarks at the UN arguing that he had to launch this war to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon. But we are now seven months into a war that he said would last just four to six weeks, and the war is now widening in the region, and there still is no clear end in sight.
I call on all nations to join us in enforcing the complete economic isolation of Iran. Until they stop their attacks on commercial shipping, relinquish their nuclear ambitions, and cease their support of terror.
Part of this speech seems to be an effort by the president to try to convince global leaders who we know are are weary of this war, who are feeling the global economic impacts of this. Uh, try to convince them that this will end soon, that that a deal could be coming.
I believe we'll make a deal. Right after the election. Because it doesn't make sense for them not to.

These dire threats that we've seen from the president in the past haven't really forced Iran to change tactics. And of course, all of this is happening while here at home. This war is Deeply unpopular. Oil and gas is reaching historic highs.
