This is Talk of the Devils, the Athletic Show dedicated to Manchester United. Coming up today, we give out our end-of-season awards. The 2025-2026 season is in the books and we're going to take a look back at the runners and riders for some of the top awards that we've made up, basically. Some of them are traditional, some of them a little bit less so. Uh we'll also take a look back at some of our predictions for the season. Do we have to do that? I g I guess we do, uh unfortunately. And to do all of that, we've got Andy on the line at home and we've got Critch and Carl in the studio here in Manchester. So how are we doing? It's a week since Manchester United last kicked a ball in anger. How do you reflect on it all, Carl?

in the end, wasn't it? I think about some of the more depressing episodes we recorded in October time and December time. They
feel a while ago, don't they?
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Almost yeah, two or three years ago now. Um but I I feel good. Um I'm looking across the Premier League at other clubs that are in the middle of uh chaos and transition and I'm going, Oh This is all right.
Yeah, everything is happening elsewhere, isn't it? That's unusual. That's unusual and it's unusual for at the same time for United to just feel very serene. Like, as well as it being nice and pleasant, it's also felt calm in a way that I haven't The the c covering the club hasn't really felt like that since maybe Ten Hag's first season, the summer going into that and then the the bit of turmoil that there was that summer. It's felt very different and I think that's it's down to one man, it's down to Michael Carrick and his the aura, the vibe, the his his personality, the character that he has. It's just come in, settled everything down, and this soap opera of a football club has been barely enough to fill an episode in terms of drama, hasn't it?
Oh well no, we filled episodes, don't worry about it. We filled episodes, yeah. I remember yeah, yeah, we've done all right with that. We're about to fill another one. I can see someone nodding out of the corner of my eye, so I'm guessing you agree with that sentiment, Andy.
I do. Loads of encouraging signs from last season. I think Manchester United overachieved European football was the target. I I would have accepted uh Europa League as a pass mark.

And up until Michael Carrick came, uh United were trending more or less for that. But since Michael Carrick came, uh if you worked out his his points per game, it'd be equivalent to eighty seven, which would have won the league this year. I'm not saying United will win the league. Next year, but uh I think he did really well. The coaches did well. He just he just got the players to buy into him. He he made the players feel special, he put on he put his arm around him, and I think that mentality is a massive part of Michael Carrick's coaching, as well as the tactical stuff, and he's right onto that bit as well. And I just couldn't have seen United beating Liverpool home and away, or beating City at home so convincingly.
Or beating Chelsea at home and away. Big wins against big clubs. The only um negatives were dropped points against clubs lower down. But yeah, go a a good season. You can't be saying we'll remember it forever 'cause no trophies were won, but it was a good season.
Yeah, it was. It's helped make the end of season awards this time around a bit more genuine. Last time we were sort of scratching around to try and make sense of a team that had finished in fifteenth place and give out awards to them. Uh we managed it. Um but we had to take a sort of slightly tongue in cheek look at it, whereas this time around it's a bit different. Just before we get into all of that, we had a an email from Stephen Carl. Um he says, I remember in a podcast episode earlier in the season, Carl positively And I'm paraphrasing here that it may turn out that Amran is not the manager that gets United back to where they want to be, but he may lay some important groundwork for those who follow.
