What are the main themes and questions introduced at the start of the episode?
The Athletic FC.
This is Talk of Levels, the athletic show dedicated to Manchester United. Come up today, it's gonna be a massive mailbag. It's the end of May, the season's over, the World Cup is yet to begin, and the transfer window isn't yet open, but there's plenty to go over. So I've got two Manchester Knight experts to go over: the great, the good, the strange, and the surreal of our mailbag. Thank you very much for everyone who sent in emails to devil's pod at theathletic.com. We're also gonna go over a little bit about World Cup call-up. Project 2028. And before we go away, we want to hear more of your opinions again before we do our season review next week when Ian comes back. So, big mailbag. I'm gonna stop talking very, very quickly so we can get into the meat of things.
I've got Laurie with me, I've got Andy with me. Gentlemen, how are we doing? United haven't played in a while. Are you starting to get fiendish?
It was only Sunday, Carl. Four days. I like it. You're getting itchy feet already. I'm I'm quite relaxed about the uh you know, break, I suppose, shall we say, 'cause I mean obviously for you and I and I think Andy as well, you've got World Cup on the horizon, haven't we? So that's looming. Uh but obviously in the meantime, yeah, Man United business transfers, questions. Thanks so much everybody that emailed in. Um yeah, there was loads and and really good interest in variety, so thank you.
I'm not missing it, mate. It was only at the weekend. I worked out I did ninety games last season. I'm looking forward to a break. I told my wife last week, um, that's it, that's me dumb for this season. And she raised her eyebrows and then I just s snuck off uh uh on Saturday to see a little game which I didn't um don't think she knows I attended. Um but that is honestly me. That that that's me done. She does now. Well, she d she doesn't watch this, she won't have a clue. What? No She don't even know the name of it. She calls it like the Devils. You still doing that Devil's thing?
I love how quickly you called it last season. It only just finished now, it's last season. That is the question,
isn't it? When does it become last season and when does it start this season, next season, pre season?
We'll get onto that in a bit later. Like you've mentioned already, Laurie, it's World Cup. You're gonna be doing some World Cup prep. I think you're off to North America. I'm not gonna reveal too many details yet, because I don't want too many Manchester United fans buying you cocktails early. You do have to do some reportage out there. Let's talk about some World Cup call-ups. We didn't get to discuss it on Monday, but England Squad, Mainu made it. Maguire didn't. Maguire also went on social media very, very early ahead of the gate, said he was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country, and after the season I've had, I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I've loved nothing more than putting a shirt on and representing my country over the years.
I wish the players all the best this summer. So, Laurie, I want your initial reaction to it, and also now a couple of days later. Does it make sense? No Harry McGuire at the World Cup.
It still doesn't make sense to me because I just think that in a tournament when you need moments in game sometimes to unlock defenses or to, you know, repel attacks, then uh someone like Harry Maguire would be absolutely essential. Obviously he's got that experience from 2018 when he was very important, twenty twenty Euros as well, obviously twenty twenty one in in in England. Um, you know, hammers a penalty into the top corner. So you know he's got got different attributes, not not least sort of scum from set pieces and and obviously heading the ball away as well. And obviously his ball playing carrying the the ball was quite instrumental, wasn't it, in twenty eighteen. Obviously Thomas Tuchel has his own thoughts on things and I think that's absolutely fair and valid and I guess he's picked a squad that he thinks can complement each other and can
