How did the Padres score 9 runs and win Game 2 vs. the D-backs?
What's going on everybody? Welcome on in here. Padres and the D-backs. Game 2 is in the 9th inning right now. Padres lead 9-4.
Griffin Canning on the mound here to see if he can finish off the D-backs and get these final 3 outs so the Padres can split these first 2 games of this 4 game set against Arizona. So we'll keep you updated on that so far in this game. It's been great overall. Herman Marquez disappointing, but other than that, Randy Vasquez goes six innings. Offensively, they got out to an early lead. A lot of guys contributing. Manny, Merrill, Zander. Zander did exit. He did foul a ball off his shin, I think. He exited. It was a 7-0 game at the time, so it's just one of those that, hey, get out of there. No need to risk it. And so we'll see what the update is if we get one after the game. But yeah, they got on Eduardo Rodriguez quick.
It was then 6-0 there after the second inning. Merrill coming through. Some of these balls were not hit hard. Like the Bogarts hit, that was not hit hard. Some of them, they just dropped in. But the Padres just realize... Luck finds you when you're putting the ball in play, when you're doing the right things. And the Padres have been doing that recently. And to me, it's just the eye test. They're more recently getting more lucky. It's funny how that works. So yeah, a couple homers by the D-backs. Did make it an 8-4 game. Then Crony in the ninth with an RBI single made it 9-4. So that's where we're at right now. There's one out. Lars Neutbar is up at the plate for the D-backs in his first game with the D-backs because he didn't play yesterday.
Before getting to the whole Pavetta thing, because we do have an update on that, Robbie Ray is scheduled to start on Friday. That was announced. And then Casey Mize, who is in Arizona with the team, he's in that dugout. He is scheduled to start tomorrow. So that's going to be exciting. Tomorrow, 640, I think, is the first pitch. So that'll be fun to see Casey Mize in a Padres uniform. He was talking to the media today, and obviously there was mixed feelings about not being with Detroit. And his best friend was Tarek Schuble, and now he's on the Dodgers, and Casey's on the Pods. And He knew that school was going to get dealt, but he didn't know about his future with the Tigers. That was a little bit more uncertain.
Were they going to try, or were they going to sell off all the parts? And they ended up selling them off. But look, he's in a contending situation right now, which is a better situation than it would have been in Detroit. And it's one of those where, yeah, There's going to be a conflict. Potters just won 9-4, by the way. 16 hits tonight, no errors on their side. So Griffin Canning was able to finish that off. So the Potters are now a game back. I think that's right, right? A game back in the wild card.
Which players led the offensive attack and who exited with an injury?
Let me double check that. Probably hasn't updated yet because the game literally just finished. But yeah, there'll be a game back of the D-backs for that final wildcard spot. I mean, that's why these series are great, because it's not a half game that you're gaining on the D-backs. It's a full game. If they can win tomorrow, then they're right there tied. Taking the rest of this series would be tremendous. But offensively, it was great to see these guys just rake off of Eduardo Rodriguez right out of the gate, not give him any room to breathe, put the ball in play, Nando using his speed to score. Manny coming through, whether it's a chopper up the middle or it's a ball that, you know, isn't hit hard but just drops in down the right field line.
It doesn't have to be the sexiest hit all the time. What matters is if you go three for five like Manny and Merrill did tonight. You drive in six runs combined between the two. Yeah, we're going to take that. But getting back to Casey Mize. So obviously he's going to be conflicted. He's going to have mixed emotions. Being in Detroit, being the number one overall pick, you develop friendships there. You develop a love for that city. But like I just said moments ago, he's in a better situation in terms of winning for the rest of this season.
