Hello, welcome. Great to have you here. I want to start today's episode a little bit differently. And I'm gonna do that by telling you where I am now with my food and with my body. So to put it simply, I feel good enough as a person and good enough in my body. My body these days is just a tool I use to live my life. I feel really quite neutral about it. It is not this kind of looming thing that dominates my thoughts or makes me feel bad about myself or dictates whether today is gonna be good or bad or terrible. And getting here where I am now today, if you've had a history like mine, like spending decades in the down up, down up cycle of trying to control my weight is just so bloody amazing. I did that cycle, I don't know, sixty five times, maybe a hundred and sixty five times.

I l I honestly have no idea. I didn't count. But at a certain point I started to realize that the size of the body I'd started with, the body I'd first decided wasn't good enough, had become the fantasy, the thing I'd give bloody anything to get back to. So this episode is about outlining the solution to all that, up down, down, up, yo-yoing. A solution that isn't diet culture or wellness hogwarts. Wash, it's uh like because a good portion of the things I tried over the years were pretending not to be diet culture. They were kind of called lifestyle or wellness changes and that just turn out to be the same thing as diet culture. So I'm Emma Wright, I'm a certified cognitive behavioral coach, I'm an intuitive eating coach, I hold a master's degree grounded in feminist theory, and I'm the author of a book called Body Confident.

And I spent years trying to feel better about myself by being thinner and by controlling what I ate. And then I found a solution to put all that behind me and to feel good about myself from the inside out, regardless of how my body looked on the outside, and that Is in a at least in part is about what this episode is about. So today specifically I'm gonna talk about that yo yo cycle. Why it happens, why it's not your fault. And what a genuinely different approach is going to look like. And at the end, I'm going to tell you about a free lunchtime workshop I'm running where you can get to apply the solution that I'm talking about today to your own specific situation. So if you're interested in that, I'll be telling you about the details of that and how to find the workshop at the end of the episode.

Okay, so let's get into it. The first time a doctor told me to lose weight, I was I dunno, I was about twenty four and she took one measurement. It was just a number on a scale. And then with using that number on the scale she sent me away with the cabbage soup diet. And when I look back she took no account of what I was currently eating, how much exercise I was doing, what was going on in my life, or what my mental health was, or Any of that. that was just based on that one number. And this was just like a routine you know, thing for her. I'm sure if you asked her, she would never ever remember that visit with me. But I remember it because when I look back at their visit. I remember feeling quite relieved, which is weird because my weight had brought so much shame to me internally and stepping on the scale when I didn't like what I saw brought so much shame.

But in this particular doctor visit, when I was told I needed to go on this diet, I felt relieved. And I think that's because I kind kind of thought finally a professional person has confirmed the problem and has given me the solution. Not just me in my own little brain thinking that I needed to. And so I kind of trotted off, kind of feeling quite relieved and hopeful, and if I just follow this advice, I will lose the weight and I will keep it off for good. But of course it wasn't the solution. It w it was exactly the same thing as every other thing I had tried. I lost some weight and And then I plateaued and then I regained it. What we know now is that this pattern is that I went through with that one and the sixty five, hundred, whatever others, is that it is biology.
