Why are mothers of young adult daughters worried about GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs?
Hi and welcome to Talking With Emma. My name's Emma Wright. I'm the feminist health coach. This is a short bonus episode for mothers of young adults aged 18 to 30 who don't know where to start when it comes to talking to your daughters about weight loss drugs. Maybe you've done some work on your own to reject diet culture, but the GLP-1 marketing is everywhere and now you're feeling conflicted.
How does body image formation affect a daughter’s decision to use GLP‑1s?
Maybe you're asking yourself, could it actually help my daughter? Or maybe you're already concerned and you know you don't like the idea of her taking one. You just don't know how to start the conversation so it will be helpful and constructive. I'm hosting a free live masterclass on Friday the 17th of July to help with exactly this situation. And here's what we're going to cover.
What does my daughter really want to gain by changing her body?
First, how body image is actually formed. I'll take you through the four aspects of body image that affect how we feel about ourselves and how we behave towards ourselves. So if our young adult is considering a GLP-1, which is the behavior part of body image, that behavior is driven by her thoughts and her feelings about what she sees when she looks in the mirror. Being able to talk to her about all those four aspects leads to a far more constructive conversation. Second, I'll ask a question almost no one in the diet and wellness industry is asking our young woman.
Which three conversation techniques create connection instead of defensiveness?
What is it that your daughter wants to get from changing her body? Once she knows that, she'll have a far clearer picture of whether GLP-1s can give her what she's wanting or not. This is such a powerful conversation to be able to have with your daughter. And third, I'll teach you three specific ways to talk to your daughter that create connection between you so these conversations are possible to have. Here's the details to register.
When and where can I join the free live masterclass to learn more?
