Why do I feel constantly behind despite knowing all the health advice?

Emma Wright 0:01
Hi and welcome to Talking with Emma. It is so great to have you here. Today I'm recording a pretty short episode. about something that I think a lot of women are experiencing and it goes like this. You know what you're supposed to do for your health and you've probably known for for quite some time, maybe years. You know that you want to eat healthy, that you should get some sleep. to move your body, to manage your stress, to have fun. to nurture healthy relationships. In other words, you are not short of information. Women are not short of information. And yet underneath all of that knowledge, there's this kind of persistent worry that you're behind. and that you're not quite doing it well enough and you certainly haven't arrived where you want to be, you know that you want to do things better than you are, and you know you'll feel more relaxed and more calm and have more energy and enjoyment once you get your routine or you get your weight or you get your fitness sorted.

That feeling of Waiting and you're never quite there, that is actually perfectionism and it leads to burnout. And that is what we're going to talk about on today's podcast. My name's Emma Wright. I'm a certified cognitive behavioural coach and I'm an intuitive eating coach and I have a master's degree based in feminist theory and I am the author of the book Body Confident. And after years of trying to feel better, by making myself thinner and controlling what I ate. I put all of that behind me. And I learned how to feel good on the inside, regardless of how my body looked on the outside. And that led to living a much fuller life. And I have made it my mission to help smart, successful, high achieving women do the same.
Emma Wright 1:58
Okay, so let's get into today's episode. Here's a kind of a typical list that many women have either written down or kind of have in their heads. I'm gonna eat hundred and twenty grams of protein today. I'm gonna lift heavy weights. I'm gonna walk with friends. I'm gonna fibre max. I'm gonna get eight hours of sleep. I'm gonna achieve my work goals. I'm gonna be a present, gentle parent. I'm gonna connect with my partner. I'm not going to eat emotionally. I'm gonna avoid sugar and ultra processed foods. I'm gonna keep my nervous system regulated. I'm going to love my body. And women, for the most part, when we have this these kind of lists, we want to do it all. every day and we want to do it perfectly. Now nothing on that list that I just read out is inherently wrong, but here's what I notice when I work with women.
Emma Wright 2:53
And it's something I wonder if you deal with as well, because I certainly deal with it as well as the woman I work with. It's not the list. It's not anything on the list, even though I've said that there's nothing on that list is inherently wrong. But if it's not the list, what is it? And I think it's our relationship with the list, the approach we are have with those things we're trying to do for our health and well being, and why underneath it all we have the approach. That we have. So as I said before, for many of us that list comes with this underlying sense of overwhelm, a sense of never arriving where we want to be, of always being slightly behind. And that's partly because we're putting things off that are really important to us until we get our health sorted.
Emma Wright 3:51
And it goes like this. Once I get my fitness back, then I'll feel happy. with myself. Once I stop eating ultra processed foods, then I'll buy new clothes. Once I get my sleep nailed, then I'll have my friends over for dinner. Once I get this lifestyle change sorted, then I'll ask for a promotion at work. But those things that we're wanting, being happy, that we're putting off, being happy, seeing friends, going to the beach, asking for the promotion, those things are so important to us. We really, really want them. So in order to try and get them, we put more things on our to-do list. to try and help us do the things we think will get us the things we want. So rather than just say to ourselves, I'll go for a a daily walk or I'll go join the gym, we join a gym class or a boot camp or we employ a personal trainer.
