Welcome to Tech Stuff, I'm Oz Voloshin. Back in 2024, a 71-year-old Parkinson's patient named Jeffrey Kiefer underwent brain surgery. While his skull was open, surgeons temporarily placed an experimental brain-computer interface directly onto his brain to record neural activity, a key step towards technology that could one day allow paralyzed individuals to control computers using only their thoughts. The following year, Precision Neuroscience, the startup behind that device, reached a big milestone, FDA clearance for 30-day human trials. As of this year, testing has expanded to nearly 100 participants across 18 major U.S. academic medical centers. Joining me today to discuss how this technology works and where it's heading is Michael Maker, CEO of Precision Neuroscience.

are you building?
We're building, as you mentioned, a brain-computer interface. That is a system that I think is best thought of as a communication tool. It creates a communication link between the brain and computers. The first use of that link is to enable people to control computers with their thoughts, people who have lost ability to move their arms and hands as a result of paralysis due to spinal cord injury and certain diseases. But we think the applications of this communication link effectively between human and artificial intelligence go way beyond paralysis. Do they say that everyone might have one? I think the future is hard to predict.
