Malcolm Gladwell here. My new book, The American Way of Killing, investigates America's gun violence crisis. Why is the richest country in the world plagued by such lethal violence? Through a series of stories, interviews, and archival tape, I confront one of today's most urgent moral dilemmas and examine why the US has never quite understood its own problem and why you can't fix what you refuse to. Why does Candace Parker resist being defined only as a basketball player?
I'm your host, Elise Hu. Do you play basketball? It's the question former WNBA player and activist Candace Parker gets just about everywhere she goes. But she's sort of come to dread it because it tries to fold a whole person into a single word. It's a feeling a lot of us know, getting summed up or put in a box, and Candace has spent her life refusing to fit in one.
Barrier breaking is about not staying in your lane and not being something that the world expects you to be. It's about not accepting limitations. It starts with inspiration and it's a foundation built upon picking apart what everybody thinks is the right way to do things.
In her talk, Candace, a two-time NCAA champion, Olympic gold medalist, and WNBA champion, shares how she learned to break barriers from her childhood as the confident kid of the family to the moment she saw women who looked like her play professional basketball for the first time.
The world had a way of just putting differences in a box and then getting mad when we had the audacity to not fit. Just as an individual, you get mad at me for not fitting in the box that you made.
She shares the most powerful lesson, as she calls it, that came from her own daughter. It's a single question that stopped Candace in her tracks and made her realize she'd been doing the very things she'd fought against her whole life. That's coming up, but first a quick word from today's sponsor, HSBC. Candace Parker shares what it takes to keep raising your sights, staying focused, thinking long term, and being ready for the next level. That mindset goes far beyond the court. Whether you're growing a business, building your wealth, or planning the legacy you want to leave, progress often starts with backing your vision and making informed decisions with purpose. At HSBC, they know ambition needs a partner, one who can read the conditions, anticipate, and
Act. It takes experience, judgment, and trust. It's not about chasing every opportunity. It's about having the conviction to go after the right one. HSBC has navigated the world's changing landscape for more than 160 years. So when your moment arrives, HSBC is there with the insight, connections, and support to help you move forward and connect you to what's next.
And now our TED
Talk of the Day. You know, everywhere in the world, the question inevitably comes up. Do you play basketball? From the neighbor across the street. Hey, do you hoop?
What does breaking barriers mean beyond sports records?
To the five foot seven guy at TSA pre check. That swore that he could beat me one on one. I despise fitting into the lane or the mold that this question insinuates. But I reluctantly say yes. А яма тутай НСІДВ Чампіян. A two time gold medalist and a two time it A two time WNBA champion. Потінсай, айскрім, а ям со мочмор. You see, barrier breaking. is about not staying in your lane and not being something that the world expects you to be. It's about not accepting limitations. It starts with inspiration and it's a foundation built upon picking apart what everybody thinks is the right way to do things.
