What sparked the idea of “time theft” in this episode?

Hello and welcome to the Art of Decluttering Podcast. I'm your host, Amy Ravel. Welcome, welcome, welcome. We have just come off the week of the Get Organized HQ Virtual Conference. Guys, I can't believe it, but right across the world with the millions of people that are in the US, us, the only Australian community, I mean, I'm sure there are a lot of you from the US as well, but the only Australian presenter, we had the community that came 14th. for the most amount of people that signed up for the conference. So thank you for showing your great support. The emails and messages and DMs that I'm getting are so encouraging. I'm glad that my session was helpful, but also I'm glad that all the other sessions that you went to were helpful.

I've started looking at some of the ones around meal planning. We're in a season of just like exhaustion at the moment. And so I'm really having to give attention to what our meals look like 'cause otherwise we'd be eating a whole lot of cereal and fish and salad, which is I I quite like fish and salad, not a big problem. Um, all that to say thank you so much. It was great to have so many of you there. This week, in fact just yesterday, I got a email and a text that said um to confirm your purchase, this is your verification code. The problem was I hadn't made a purchase. So I chatted to Cal and said, like, have you made a purchase? He also hadn't. Um, and nobody else has access to our bank accounts. We were scammed.
Amy Revell 1:32
So somebody was trying to put through purchases on our debit card. Thank goodness the system worked where they had to do two factor authentication. The authentication came to me and I flagged it. We quickly, as soon as like we literally got our If I just went quickly turn our cards off so that that was no longer an option. And then had to call our bank and they said, Yes, it does sound like a scam. We're gonna have to cancel all your cards, we're gonna have to reissue them. And it took us about two hours of time because we had to do all this verification with the bank. far and beyond what we've ever had to do before to make sure that we weren't the scammers calling to cancel our things and have a new card sent to us.
Amy Revell 2:10
It was a whole thing.

How did a debit‑card scam illustrate the hidden cost of clutter?

Amy Revell 2:11
It was exhausting and it took a lot of time and it made me think about what I want to talk to you about today and that's the concept of time theft. So what the scammers were trying to do is they were trying to like money theft. They were trying to steal our money. Thank goodness they didn't get a thing. However, what they did steal was my time. And if that'd stolen fifty dollars, I could've earned fifty dollars back. But I can't get back that two hours that we spent on the phone to the bank, plus the stress of realizing that this was all going down in real time. It was out of hours when it went down. So we're trying to navigate what to do with all of that. And it made me think that the scammers tried to take our money, but the really costly thing they took was our time.
Amy Revell 2:56
And clutter is often the same, right? Where we think, well, it's just taking up space, or maybe it just costs me money. But ultimately clutter is a huge time thief. Clutter steals your time when you're trying to when you're purchasing items, when you're bringing them home, when you're trying to find where to put them, when you're navigating them around your house, when you're cleaning them, when you're storing them, when you're putting them away, when you can't find things, when you spend a weekend like trying to tackle a room because of the clutter. And the true cost of the clutter, similar to what happened with our bank account, is not the money, it's not the stress, or those those things are very, very real.
Amy Revell 3:36
But the one I want to focus on today is actually just the time. Clutter steals so much of our time. And ironically, there are a lot of things that we spend our money on that we think is going to bring benefit, but actually just brings clutter and kind of undoes the good things that we wanted to achieve. So have a think about what um an an ordinary evening would look like or an ordinary Saturday or Sunday in your home.
