Well this was happening without you and we missed you. So no more no more holidays allowed on a Monday, right? And our German football correspondent Seb Stafford Blor will join us having sat down with England captain Harry Kane for the latest My Game in My Words on the Athletic.
Yeah, there's so much talk in all athletes about once you get to your thirties about slowing down and um yeah, one of my heroes, Tom Tom Brady, played until we was forty four or f and it's like Do I think sometimes is it just a perception thing? Is it uh people that everyone around you saying that you should be slowing down, you start to pink it yourself, whereas I'm I'm the opposite. Until I start seeing it in data and I start seeing it in my performance, you know, I'm just gonna keep pushing and and see where it takes me.
But let's start with Chelsea, because after scoring three goals at Fulham to start the week, they put four past Brighton. at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Rob, you were there working. I mean, how exciting were they to watch Chelsea?
Yeah, exciting is a word unstoppable at times it felt. And you look at the three up front and it's such a wonderful interchangeable three and the space that they created for each other and the unstoppable bit was Morgan Rogers, I felt in there. But Scagli sat on Cole Palmer's. He was quite quiet. Jal Pedro was had his he was up and ready to go because it was his old team. But Morgan Rogers was the one where when he did Decided to do something against someone or two players, just roll someone or just run past them, he did it. And those are the types of players that put fear in the opposition that you stand there going, we don't know what to do to stop him. If he decides to run past you, or if he decides to roll you, he can do it.
And between them, there's such an exciting trio. I try to think of teams I played against, and sort of you look at the Manchester United. Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney, Skulls in there. Those four had their own facets and but they were every much individual, out on the left or w down the middle. These three can do it together, they can mix it up, Morgan Rogers can wander over, Cole Palmer can drift, Gio Pedro the same. And it just felt, you know, such a such a really anticipating such a really good season between the three of 'em.
You you were, of course, part of the Athletics Chelsea Writers last season. When you look at the the goals that they scored across the whole of last season, fifty eight goals that was nineteen fewer than the highest scorers in Manchester City. Was this an obvious area that, you know, coming into this season, Jabby Alonso was really gonna target the fact that they needed to get to get more goals this season?
Yeah, I think so. But I do think that that sort of stat masks things like Cole Palmer not being particularly informed. They had the whole team had a really horrible dry spell through like I think March from March onwards after they beat Aston Villa and it was a really good performance. And then they lost six consecutive league games, didn't score for five of them. So I think there was elements of if you look back at November, October sort of even maybe start of December, there were some of the highest scorers in the league. And then it was kind of individuals dropping off in form. For instance, Pedro Neto, I think, was their third highest scorer last season in the league with five goals, but they were all kind of before the turn of the year.
