Yeah, I mean, a bit like Tim trying to squeeze in as much as I can. I've been enjoying watching when I wake up, my boys are pretty young. It's like their first World Cup that they are at all aware of and will watch kind of some of the highlights from the middle of the night games. And that's quite a nice way to kind of start your day with, you know, a game that was on at 2am or 5am. I'm not that hardcore, I must confess.
Now, to the latest games, you're going to be hearing from Matt Slater very, very shortly indeed, who watched the Ivory Coast against Ecuador. But first, to Chris Branch, who watched Germany 7, Curacao 1, and it was the moment of history that stood out for him.
I will remember Curacao's first goal for the rest of my life. I've covered a lot of sporting moments, and that was so memorable. It is a point in favor of the 48-team tournament. It's all I could think about, where people, including myself, came in decrying the expanded tournament, saying maybe it would cheapen the product. And then seeing Curacao's thousands of fans here just erupt in emotion after the... What's up, man? I'm from Curacao, and we want today 7-1. Relax there, brother. He said it better than I could have.
Hi, I'm Matt Slater, senior news reporter for The Athletic, and I was at the Philadelphia Stadium this evening to see Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0. I was there with lots and lots of Ecuador fans. We've all had to rush away from the stadium. There was a weather warning at the end of the game. But what I did see this evening was a fantastic game between two evenly matched teams. But there were some key difference makers, and one was Yandier Mande. I felt like the world has worked out who he is. I think there's all kinds of question marks about who he's going to be playing for next season. He was Rookie of the Year. And that's not me going native. That's what the Bundesliga calls it as well. He was Rookie of the Year last year, playing for RB Leipzig.
He was brilliant tonight. He absolutely destroyed Piero Hincapi in the first half, then swapped sides and did the same thing to Ecuador's right back in the second half. Apart from that, great night, two good teams. Ecuador, they'll have another go, I'm sure. Ivory Coast, they've pretty much made it to the knockout stages. First time they've done that, it's their fourth World Cup. First time they beat a South American team as well. So I saw plenty of firsts. Nyan Diamande. He's the one I'll remember.
Yeah, there you go. Matt, absolutely loving Jan Diamande. It wasn't that long ago that we did a show speaking to James Pearce, our Liverpool correspondent, because there has been a lot of interest in him. Not James Pearce, Jan Diamande. Of course, there is an interest in James Pearce as well. But yeah, I mean, people have seen how good he can be, Tim. I guess that's going to just only add to the price tag, isn't it? His performances in this World Cup.
