The Athletic FC.
Hi there and welcome to the Athletic FC podcast with me, Adam Leventhal. So Cristiano Ronaldo broke his knockout curse as Portugal overcame Croatia. Spain strolled through to the round of 16. And with Tenali set for Tottenham, we'll ask why Newcastle are selling their best players. Here in the studio, we have Keris Jones and Art de Rocher. Good to see you both. Plenty to come from both of you. Before we get to the World Cup action, though, a little look ahead to the big transfer news in the Premier League centring on Newcastle and Tottenham as well at the moment, which we're going to be discussing later on in the show. Let's quite literally check in with our football correspondent, David Ornstein, talking Tottenham and Tenali.
Well, having arrived in Atlanta to the seismic news of Tottenham Hotspur being in the process of finalising a deal to sign Matthias Fernandes for a club record £85 million, I'm now leaving Atlanta to the seismic news of Tottenham Hotspur being in the process of finalising a deal to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. for a new club record package worth £100 million. That comprises an initial fee of £92.5 million and then potential add-ons worth £7.5 million. I expect Tenali to sign a six-year contract through until June 2032. Once he's completed all medical tests and the formalities, that one will be announced like Fernandez was to a remarkable few days for the North London club. It is pretty jaw-dropping spending and activity with Roberto de Zerbi at the heart of it, playing a key role in getting these deals over the line.
and trying to take Tottenham back to the higher echelons of the Premier League. And eventually they will hope European football as well. They don't want to repeat what we've seen in the last couple of years when they've been in relegation fights. They want to be challenging with the biggest beasts. And they certainly are doing so in the transfer market. Now let's see if that can be replicated on the pitch.
So David Ornstein making a big announcement against some announcements in the background there. His travel log continues moving around the States, covering the World Cup for us and keeping an eye on the transfer news as always. We'll have more on that Tenali deal and what it means for all of the clubs involved a little bit later on. But let's get stuck in to the World Cup action. If you're catching up, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland all through to the round of 16. And Mats later previewed Portugal against Croatia for us. And the game didn't disappoint. Let's check in with him again.
I can't believe you expect me to sum up that game in 90 seconds. But I will try. Buckle up. Game two halves. First half. Portugal on top, a little bit cagey. Second half, completely different. Croatia come charging out of the blocks. Loads and loads of chances. Ivan Perisic, yes, Ivan Perisic slots one in at the back post. We then get another Croatian goal offside. We get a Ronaldo goal, really good goal, offside. We then get a rugby tackle at a corner. Only VAR spots it. Ronaldo penalty scores. Loudest celebration I've heard at this World Cup. I think we then get another Croatia offside goal. Then, first big narrative, Ronaldo is sat down. He's subbed. Game goes into added time. Gonzalo Ramos, who's now playing up front where Ronaldo was, scores a great glancing header to put Portugal 2-1 up.
That's the 94th minute. Game now into the 90... 100th minute, 101st minute.
What is the breaking transfer news about Sandro Tonali and Tottenham?
Should be over, but Croatia score. Or do they? No, because Snikomata gets involved. It turns out Croatia forward, flicks it, just touches his hair. That meant the next Croatian player was offside. Doesn't really matter what happens next, provided the old did bundle it in. Croatian fans throw loads and loads of debris onto the pitch. That delays things into the 110th minute. Whistle finally blows. Game over. Modric, probably his last World Cup game. He's 40. Find back the tears. Ronaldo puts on Diego Jota's jersey. It was a day short of the first anniversary of Jota's death.
