What quarterback matchups set the tone for Week 2 of college football?
Welcome to a new episode of Building the Beast, brought to you by the US Bank Smartly Visa Signature Card. Got a fantastic episode for y'all today. A big quarterback weekend in college football. Yes, Arch Manning. Yes, Dante Moore. Yes, Julian Saiyan. And also a big weekend from Drew Mestimaker at Oklahoma State. Dane and I got deep on some quarterback talk. As well as some risers and fallers, some other quarterback prospects maybe you haven't heard about yet in the early college football season. Great episode, great conversation with my guy, Dan Brugler. Let's get right to it.
Well, Dane, we built it up a fair amount heading into the weekend. And I gotta say, week two of the college football season absolutely delivered on the hype in a lot of ways. But for the hype and expectation that we're placing on this quarterback class, it was really exciting to know on Saturday night. We were gonna have some quarterback stuff to talk about on Building the Beast. And we're gonna hit some other topics at some points during the show. We're gonna talk about a lot of players involved in these games. But in this episode, we do really wanna focus on some quarterbacks because we saw some stuff on Saturday, man.
It's fascinating because I think there's so many different ways to interpret the quarterback outings that we saw. Um Whether it's Texas, Ohio State or Oregon, Oklahoma State, or some of the other quarterback performances, there's different ways to interpret it. It's still week two, right? There's still uh a lot of season left to go where the narratives will change uh based on how the rest of the season plays out. But to your point, I think this is a uh it was a fun weekend, without a doubt, of quarterback play. And then now it's like, okay. Let's go back to the tape, rewatch it, and see if we can come up with some uh you know, hard and fast opinions about where we are in terms of uh is this class living up to the the hype that we placed on it?
Or not we, but the collective we in this being a quarterback class that you know we'll be talking about for a long time. Or are we there or are we still it's still More of an idea than something that's we're seeing on the field. So yeah, a lot to talk about. Which game do you want to start with?
So it would be easy to start with Ohio State, Texas. But we're not gonna do that. Like we have plenty to say. And we're gonna talk about Arch. We're gonna talk about Jeremiah Smith and Julian Saiyan and the Buckeyes. Don't get me wrong, but what you just said is why I wanna start somewhere else. I wanna start with Oklahoma State, Oregon, because and I'll I'll gladly take the Mia Culpa for this. W we know it's a long season. We know we shouldn't rush to judgment. But when Drew Mestimaker started his season completing fifty percent and throwing two picks and looking overmatched by Tulsa, It was really easy for me to say, All right, Drew Mestimaker, you're still a very interesting player, but I'm just I'm putting you on the back burner because there's no way that that this is gonna be overly exciting if that's what week one looked like.
And it took precisely seven days for Drew Mestimaker to make me look like an idiot because what a performance against Oregon. And on top of that, we know Oregon. beat Oklahoma State like 69 to 3 in week just an absolute smackdown last year. So you combine MestiMaker's week one performance with what this matchup looked like just a year ago. And even in the transfer portal era where, you know, they're where Oklahoma State's bringing in all these North Texas guys, even with different rosters, it was hard for me to imagine this was going to look Dramatically, dramatically different. And boy, did it ever buddy. Drew Mestimaker. And now I don't want to get too high and put the guy into the first round of the draft after one game, but talk about salvaging your reputation after a low, low to open the season.
Drew Mestimaker. just put a lot of really exciting stuff on tape in a a thrilling upset of Oregon. So that's where I would like to start is analyzing his day.
