We are getting an inside look at the music of Toy Story 5, which I'll get into later in this episode why it makes it as one of my best movies of the summer. But right now we have Taylor Swift joining us to break down her latest number one song, I Knew It, I Knew You. I want to talk to her about drawing inspiration from Jesse's emotional arc, paying homage to the legendary Randy Newman, and what it's really like in the studio during the song. songwriting process. So let's jump right in. Here is Taylor Swift. Taylor, Toy Story 5 touches on some really big emotional themes. Even me as an adult watching this movie, like it hit me right in the gut. There were moments that if my heart was not made of stone, I probably would have shed a tear.
But for you, what was it about Jesse's story in this movie that inspired the lyrics of I Knew It, I Knew You?
When I got to see an early version of Toy Story 5, I was struck by several themes going on throughout the movie, but I really was zeroing in on Jesse, the character that has been my favorite ever since she was introduced into these films. And I was seeing that she was going through sort of like a um a full circle moment as a character and that If you've watched the Toy Story films, you know her central heartbreak comes from her kid, Emily. And um I was just kind of seeing her go through things with Bonnie that sort of healed those wounds in a way. And and Um there was a lot of like reunions of old friends and seeing people that you haven't seen in a while and kind of forgiving past past heartbreak or whatever and kind of healing that within yourself and
So I remember thinking of the line, I knew you through the days of the blades of the grass in summer. And that being sort of a line I loved because there's it conjures up this idea of childhood and playfulness and everything, but also they're toys. So they're literally looking through blades of grass because that's how tall they are. Um, and I also kind of like it when a word like days, like D-A-Z-E, sounds like D-A-Y-S, and you can, as a listener, just Decide which word you assigned to the meaning of that. But yeah, that was the first kind of lyric that I came up with. And it happens to be the first uh lyric of the song.
When it comes to movie soundtracks, I don't think it gets more iconic than Randy Newman's You've Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story One. And all throughout the Toy Story franchise, there is so much great music. You and Jack Gantchinoff brought a really distinct sound to this song, including that really great harmonica part. So, how did honoring Randy Newman's iconic work in the franchise shape your musical approach and perspective for this song?
When I realized that we were gonna have the opportunity to write a song for Toy Story. It really hit me the weight of this, like how lucky we were to get to sort of take up what Randy Newman has created and
