What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Welcome back to The Comeback with Brenda and today we're doing something a little different. This is my very first Comeback Confidential, a bonus episode where we open up the space to you. Over the past while I've been getting so many messages and emails from people who want to share their stories, their struggles and the things they're going through but for their own reasons they're not quite ready to come on and speak about it themselves and that's completely okay. So this is where Comeback Confidential comes in. This is a safe space where I can bring your anonymous stories, your questions, your situations, and we can talk about them together openly and honestly while protecting your identity.
If you ever want to share something, you can email me at thecomebackofbrenn.gmail.com and I promise your details will always remain completely anonymous. Now, I also wanted to make sure that we're not just talking, but we're actually helping. So for these episodes, I'll be joined by experts and contributors who can really bring insight, guidance and support to what you're going through. And today I'm absolutely delighted to be joined by someone you already know and loved from the podcast before, psychotherapist Lauren Golden. Lauren joined me before to talk about why women go swimming and the response to that episode was incredible.
How does addiction affect relationships with loved ones?
So Lauren, I asked you to come back. People absolutely adored you. Like we did that off the cuff pretty much, didn't we? We did, yeah. It was a real kind of last minute thing, wasn't it?
very last minute and you were absolutely fabulous and I had never met you yeah it was so easy to talk to straight from the get-go yeah no you do I feel like you bring that in though don't you you bring in that real like friendly safe space to be able to chat I think that's why people gel so well with the podcast do you know I think they feel it yeah oh and I'm around you we're taking a picture like your mother yeah I was like okay am I nestling in here yeah I know
I'm so used. I was just like, put the arm around her. But like, anyway, here we are. I'm delighted to have you here because I get quite a lot of emails. Same as talk radio. You get, you probably get, you get so many messages. Yeah, you would. Of course you would.
As well.
What challenges do partners face when loving someone with addiction?
And people want to remain anonymous. And you see, it's hard for me when people email and they want to bring it up. I don't just want to be sitting there on my own reading it and not trying to give a solution. I know you can't fix people's problems. You can guide. You know, you can advise. And inform. Inform. And I just said to myself, I was out running. Thank you.
as we both love running I think it was Friday I messaged you or Thursday it was a Thursday or Friday it was before the weekend anyway yeah I think it was Friday you and your like just intrusive thoughts like let's make it into something I'm not a bit surprised you're diagnosed with ADHD or like riddled as they say riddled it's incredible though like the creativity that comes with an oedipal brain I feel like that and then the need to act on it and you can do a million things and maybe some will fall flat but I think the reason people with ADHD can be so successful is because they go for it the impulsivity takes over you know
Yeah, straight away. Love it. Actually, I got into the car after the run around and around Murphy's Farm in Corahean and there was two ideas I had in my head and bang, you were the first one and then bang, the other one and actually the other one involved running as well. And I was like, I just have to do it.
How can you support someone with addiction without losing yourself?
And in fairness, here we are on the Monday.
Yeah.
And I've sent you the emails and we're going to discuss them. Now, The first email is something, Lauren, that I keep getting in my inbox all the time. And, like, I know you can't, I suppose, what's, you can't, I just want to get this right, they say you can't give advice, right?
Like, I can't be like to you, leave him, unless I have worked with you and we've really, like, teased that out. Because at the end of the day, right,
