Why does AI matter for conscious capitalists and how can leaders avoid being left behind?
AI is going to change the way everything is done. And so everyone is trying to figure out how not to be left behind. What leaders need to be thinking about is what AI does not do. Critical thinking, critical writing, reasoning, and relationship management and building AI cannot do. And so if you're thinking about replacing your workforce, you're going to lose everything you built in engagement with your customers because you're going to lose that human touch. The question a conscious capitalist needs to ask is how do we ensure people do not get left behind?
Hello, everyone. Welcome to this, our sixth episode of our special podcast on the future of the conscious enterprise. And today, post our Cincinnati event, we have an amazing guest. Now, I'm going to do an informal and informal introduction of Valerie, because the informal introduction is, here's a woman who has the responsibility as the chief people officer is a leadership expert, has worked in a couple of very disruptive businesses, one of whom is very well known. On top of that, she's a lawyer. and an author, and a lecturer. So how do you put all of that into one human being? I don't know, but that's why we're very blessed today to have Valerie Capers-Workman. Hello, Valerie.
Hey, wow, what an introduction. I hope I can meet those expectations now.
Oh. Wow. Well, you're an amazing person, so it's easy to get lost in that. But you currently serve as the Chief Human Resources Officer for Empower Pharmacy. And Empower Pharmacy is one of our sponsors for the Cincinnati event. We were very, very grateful for that. And prior to that, you've held a number of different roles, including at Tesla and at Handshake. You've helped scale some of these businesses. You're the author of a best-selling book, Quantum Progression, The Art and Science of Career Advancement in the Age of AI. And you've got a new edition of that known as The Quantum Leap. to be released in 2026. On top of that, you also are on the board of trustees for Huston Tilson University, the advisory board for Syracuse University SI Newhouse School of Public Communication, and your license to practice law.
I am. In three states.

I am so happy to be here. Thank you so much. What a cool expanded introduction. I must say my new book comes out November 25th this year, next month, 2025.
You say that again, your new book comes out when, November?
November 25th.
All right. Thanksgiving just in time for Christmas shopping
for
all the people out there that are really concerned about AI and what that might do for their careers.
What does a people‑centric leader need to focus on when AI can’t replace critical thinking and relationship management?
Yes, sir. So, Valerie, that might be a really good place to start. You know, last week I was privileged to be in a group of 50 CEOs for a few days, and one of the topics clearly was AI and the disruption. And one of the things I've noticed, I was out in Silicon Valley in June having some discussions, and discussions last week is the sense of urgency that is starting to build. Right. And also at the same time, the sense of, I have no frigging idea what's going to happen. If they sort of had an idea in June, they have no idea today. And I want to frame it this way and then get your thoughts on this. So a lot of these CEOs are for mid-sized and larger enterprise businesses. And the discussion we were having was, wow, watch out for the AI native disruptor.
Somebody's going to come along, and by AI native disruptor, we mean somebody who's an AI company and will come in and disrupt your industry or parts of it. And there was a lot of, oh, we all need to think that way. And at the same time, like, oh, we're these companies that have built a competitive advantage, have built a pretty successful business by doing our knitting on better than our competitors. How, when you look forward, the first thing that I think is important for a conscious enterprise of the future is that strategic question. How are we going to deal with a time of amazing disruption? When, you know, we're the sitting company and we have this threat coming in from the side.
