What is the purpose of this throw‑back episode and who are the hosts?
I founded Ornot in 2013. I think the best thing about Shopify is that we can practice business without technical skills. We can manage the company's background systems and front-end and sell online. If Shopify was a bicycle equipment, it would be a bicycle itself. That way things are handled and our business is handled in Shopify. Start a free trial at shopify.com website.
Hi, I'm Sophie. I'm one of the founders of The Curve, and I went from being in 50k of debt, not understanding investing, knowing how to budget, save. I was a total financial disaster. Now I have two investment properties, over 100k in the stock market, and I'm in no debt. But I did not always used to be this good with money and investing. And it all started from the very beginning of this podcast. We're currently on a podcast break. So we're having two weeks off new episodes. And we wanted to do some throwbacks to the vintage OG episodes that were released originally five years ago when I knew nothing about investing. If you don't need to go back to these throwback episodes, enjoy two weeks without us in your ears.
But if you know anyone who's felt left out of the conversation when it comes to money, investing, or just really don't know where to start, please send them this podcast. We'll be back for regular programming at the start of October. Welcome to the OG Curve episodes. So we recorded these, no joke, six years ago. This was at a time when I was financially 100% illiterate. And I'm actually, I'm just not exaggerating when I say that. Anyone who's listened from the beginning of the curve will know I didn't understand inflation. I had no investments. I had no retirement funds. I had no idea how to budget, save, invest money. And money was just this really terrifying part of my life that caused a lot of low-level anxiety.
I listened to the questions that I ask, and I almost want to go and hug little Sophie.
How does Sophie describe her journey from debt to investing success?
But as much as I would like to sweep these episodes under the rug, because for me, it's almost like, wow, I can't believe I knew so little about That is the whole point of the curve. That's why we started this podcast. It's why the whole business exists is that there's so many people like me who never got any financial education when it comes to how to budget, save, invest and grow your wealth so that one day you're not hopefully working in exchange for your time. The idea of investing is that you build up a portfolio that hopefully is big enough that you can just, if you don't want to work, you can be work optional. So these are our OG vintage first episodes that we ever put out. We have decided not to do the intro to The Curve because that was quite literally the first one we ever put out.
Vic and I were like, oh my God, we're not pretenders. How are we doing this? But this is the second episode we ever released. It is the fundamental basics when it comes to finance and investing. So we discuss everything from what a return actually means. You'll hear us a lot in the podcast saying, you know, what was the return or what's the annual return or the returns are not very good. Returns is one of those words that's sort of thrown around by a lot of finance speak and And understanding really what that means is super, super important. So we talk about what does a return mean for the different types of asset classes. So what is the return you're getting on an investment? What is the money that you are earning depending on what you've invested in?
This might be a really nice refresher. If you've listened to the podcast for a while, going back to these beginning episodes might actually be a really great thing to just, yeah, go back to the drawing board. Remember the fundamentals of investing. And maybe not, maybe these episodes actually aren't for you, but if you know about investing or you feel quite confident in these basics, I would highly encourage you to send these episodes as they come out to any of your friends or family or people you know, because they can start again. They can start from these beginning episodes and work their way up so that the Curve Weekly makes sense to them.
