Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This episode is brought to you by our friends at CommBank.
From The Daily Aus, I'm Lucy Tassel. I'm Emma Gillespie. It's Monday, the 20th of April. Here's what's making headlines this evening.
The ceasefire in the US-Israel war with Iran is in doubt after the US fired on an Iranian cargo ship, then seized it. Iranian military authorities have vowed to retaliate against this, quote, armed piracy by the US military, with days left to go in the 10-day ceasefire agreed earlier this month.
In a post to Truth Social, US President Donald Trump said the Navy had intercepted the ship as it tried to get around the blockade he ordered to be put in place around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran closed the strait in response to US and Israel strikes last month. Trump instituted the blockade on ships heading to and from Iran after a mid-ceasefire round of peace talks failed last week.
The two nations were set to head into another round of negotiations in Pakistan this week.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has foreshadowed some of the measures the government could implement in the upcoming federal budget, the first since the 2025 election. At a press conference on Monday, Chalmers said the government would seek to reduce increases in the cost of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, or NDIS.
Chalmers also noted the US-Israel war with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz had changed plans for the budget, limiting how much the government will earn in taxes over the next four years. Separately, Finance Minister Katie Gallagher told ABC Radio on Monday morning the budget will include changes to some financial regulation and would focus on intergenerational equality.
The budget will be handed down at 7.30pm on the 12th of May and TDA will be in Parliament House to cover all the action.

Chapter 2: What recent event has put the U.S-Israel ceasefire with Iran in doubt?
The children ranged in age from one to about 12 years old. The mother and the other woman are in critical conditions while the man died after a police pursuit. Shreveport Police Department spokesman Chris Bordelon said the man shot one of the women first and then drove to another house where he killed the children.
Local authorities said some of the children had tried to escape out the back door and by climbing onto the roof of the house. It marks the deadliest mass shooting in the US since January 2024, according to a database maintained by the Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

And today's good news. Australian golfer Hannah Green has won the prestigious LA Championship for the third time. The world number eight won the competition in 2023 and 2024. Her 2026 victory in Los Angeles means she has now won eight tournaments on the LPGA Tour,
the official season for the top level of women's golf, making her one of the five most successful female Australian golfers of all time. It was also Green's fourth win from the five tournaments she's played in this year. She headed straight from LA to Texas to play in the Chevron Championship, which is the first major tournament of the year. So that's basically like a grand slam in tennis.
They also have them in golf.
What a slay. Go Hannah Green.
I thought that story was so cool. I don't know anything about golf, but I know what winning a lot means.
Or should I say, go Hannah Green and Gold. Oh, love. Petition to change her last name. Yes. Don't do the paperwork, not worth it. Okay. That is the latest from the Daily Oz Newsroom for another day, but if you're looking for something else to listen to, you can catch up on this morning's Deep Dive, where we unpack the lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster.
