Last week, the trial of Beau Lamar Condon, the former policeman charged with the murders of Luke Davies and Jesse Baird, began in the New South Wales Supreme Court. As the case has unfolded, we've learnt what both the prosecution and the defence will be arguing happened that day in February over two years. Years ago. In today's podcast, we're going to talk through what those two arguments actually are, as well as what we've learnt in the intervening period since.
So Zara, this story unfolded about two and a half years ago now. I remember it so vividly because um I believe it was Jesse Baird who we first found out was missing. And then as it unfolded in real time, it just got more and more shocking.
Yeah, and I think also the timing of it is important because it was just before Mardi Gras. I don't know if you remember that, but the the context in which this story began unfolding was yeah, I mere weeks before Mardi Gras and that i in itself, you know, was its own story. Yes. But yeah, it's hard to believe it was two and a half years ago.
Well, it was complicated. I mean, Mardi Gras has a complicated relationship with police officers and as we will get into, it is a police officer, a New South Wales police officer, who is alleged to have murdered these two men.
How did the investigation uncover the missing couple’s disappearance?
For anyone who doesn't remember the story for the time, take us back to the details.
Yeah. So it all began uh in February, as I said, of twenty twour. Uh that is when police began investigating the disappearance of these two men, Jesse Baird and Luke Davies. Uh they began to investigate their disappearance after neighbors reported hearing gunshots from Baird's home. He lived in Paddington in Sydney, and that was really the beginning of what spurred on the the rest of this timeline. Uh I was looking back, we did a podcast at the time, and I was looking back on the police press conference that we spoke about at the time, and it's quite remarkable. To see what's happened since and how much information has been made public since. But what we did learn at the time, and certainly from that police press conference at the time, was that four minutes after those shots were first heard, as I said, by neighbors, there was a triple zero call made from Jesse Baird's phone.
It was then disconnected. So that's what we learnt at the time. Police said that on that same day, Bo Lamar Condon hired a white van from Sydney Airport. A day later, police alleged he told an acquaintance that he had been involved in the death of two individuals. The exact wording from the police at the time was that he allegedly made partial admissions. And I mentioned that because it's important and we'll come back to it a bit later. Police then at the time told media that over the following days, Lamar Condon drove. Between Sydney, Bungonia, which is a place about 200 kilometers, I think, southwest of Sydney, and Newcastle. So there were trips to and fro uh from all of these destinations. And then on the Friday of that week, he drove back from Newcastle to Sydney.
Uh, he drove to Bondi police station, where he then handed himself into police. So Bolamar Condon, as we said, this Former police officer walks into a police station days after these two men are reported missing, hands himself in, but at that point we still didn't know where the bodies were. And from that time we understand that Bolomar Condon was not cooperating with police and was not telling them where those bodies could be found. Uh, but then days later they were found in Bungonia, that place that I just spoke about, and Bolamar Condon has since been charged with two counts of murder as well as breaking and entering.
