How did the hosts frame the media's failure after the 2024 election on Veterans Day?
I am so happy that you guys could join us this day on this Veterans Day. So thank you so much. Good evening, everybody. Welcome to Lemon Live at Five. We've got a great show for you today. We're going to be talking to someone who knows everything there is about the media, has great sources, is really a pro at this. And we're going to talk about What went wrong? I don't know if there's any blame to go who specifically to blame. I think there's enough blame to go around and we're going to discuss and we're going to have you be a part of it as well. So I'd like to wish all of our former U.S. and active U.S. service members in the audience a very happy Veterans Day. We're so happy that you're here. Thank you for your service.
We're grateful for it. And all of us in elimination are deeply grateful to everything that you have done for this country, especially in the dark times like this. It is your selfless sacrifice that reminds us why we are proud to be Americans. I wanted to make sure I wrote that down. I wanted to make sure to thank you. So we appreciate your service, especially on this day. On that note. Let's talk about our fight of keeping America the land of the free and the home of the brave, right? We fight for our democracy because I am deeply concerned that our media is not equipped for a second term of Donald Trump. What is to come? So bear with me on this for a moment, please, because I just want to read a passage.
This is from an article that struck me today, and I'm going to quote here, okay? The media got it wrong, fatally wrong. And the media just can't just pivot into the next cycle of looking around the room and asking what just happened. And if it had nothing to do, as if it had nothing to do with it. The room is too small for that. The audience is too insular. The results were decisively not what was expected. And in some way, the media has forfeited its mandate as a result. We have to step back and look at the wreckage. Our system of information failed for a second time on two major fronts. The media failed to gauge the actual mood of the American electorate, wish-casting the competent non-Felonious Kamala Harris into the office, and it failed to speak persuasively to voters who rejected the collective wisdom of legacy media after being told who Trump is, what bad acts he had already committed, and what further bad acts he has promised to
if reelected. No, none of it landed, it appears. Apparently, we are talking to ourselves. That passage was penned by the very brilliant Sharon Waxman, who's my guest today. Sharon, thanks for joining us. She's the founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief of The Wrap. She's an award-winning journalist and the best-selling author, and she was a Hollywood correspondent for The New York Times. I'm so glad that you're here. How are you doing today?
I'm good. Thanks for reading that. I mean, it doesn't make me happy to write it, but I think somebody needs to say it.
Well, I was going to say, and what prompted you? Because a lot, look, there's a lot of like, you know, people who are, you know, doing their postmortems, right? And saying, oh, this person should have done this, should have done that. What prompted you to do that? What was the thing that made you realize like, hey, media failed here?
Well, for one thing, I just felt like incapable, like literally physically incapable of watching the news the day after the election. And I'm hearing that from so many people. I'm seeing it on social. I'm hearing it from other people. And it's what I opened the piece with, which is I've been unable to watch CNN or MSNBC. I'm not a Fox News watcher because I don't watch propaganda if I can help it. but um at the end of the day i really need cable news in particular to be quiet because they have been shoveling a particular point of view without relentlessly telling us as voters i speak now not as a member of the media covering the election because i didn't cover the election except from the media standpoint but as a voter who's looking for information
