Why is muscle loss the hidden challenge of menopause?

Dr. Gabrielle Lyon 0:00
Whether we like it or not, menopause is changing your body. Women lose mass. They lose lean mass. This matters way past how your clothes fit. When you lose muscle. You have less place to put carbohydrates, which ultimately creates a ton of problems. Low muscle mass is an early indication of low bone density. One thing is for sure that if you stop moving your body through space in ways that you did when you were younger, you will get to a place where you will. no longer be able to move your body through space in the way that you once did. Menopause is coming and you should not wait. There is no magic pill, patch, or injection that is going to solve for muscle loss with aging. But it doesn't have to change your life.

So one of my girlfriends called me and she is 50 and she was like, Gabrielle, I cannot believe it. I tried to put my luggage in the overhead bin and I couldn't. No one noticed it, but holy frick, what just happened? It took me three attempts. I'm Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, and today we are going to be talking about menopause. Not hot flashes, not chin hair, but muscle. Menopause arrives like taxi. Day on schedule for some, early for others, late for a few, but it arrives whether or not you are prepared for it. And I am telling you, when it comes to research and science, we are riding with training wheels. We know a great deal about certain hormones, and there is a substantial amount of evidence and hormonal input that we don't know.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon 1:45
For women who are listening to this, I get it because you can't predict. When your menopause is coming. So you spend an enormous amount of energy dreading the unknown, which of course leads to the next logical step: going down the Dr. Google rabbit hole. And what you find there is so bleak and horrible that A, you would never want to become a menopausal woman, B, you would never want to hire one or three. You would never want to be friends with one. All of that is terrible and untrue.

When does lean‑mass decline actually begin and why is it hard to detect?

Dr. Gabrielle Lyon 2:20
The truth lies somewhere in the middle. And for years, the public conversation has had one fork in the road. And just think about this. So you've got some people that are a yes or no to hormone therapy. And everyone else, it's just like I went through menopause. But we have to understand that we can't treat it. As if it's a hormonal problem, a yes or no, do I treat or do I not? Because women who are going through menopause, they have to wait for an appointment, a prescription, a permission to do the thing that they've already done within their control, which is Eat differently or exercise, right? So the first question is what are you going to do for your skeletal muscle? You still have to understand that we have to care for the foundation of our bodies.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon 3:10
Muscle is a central priority. not kind of a nice to have. And I've been talking about this forever, but not in the context so much about menopause. So whether you are feeling like you have gained weight or lost muscle. Something is happening, and whether it's testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, we have to understand what they are doing to your metabolism. What do we know and what do we don't? And of course, the question that everyone wants to know is whether a 50-year-old body can build new muscle. But before we start, we're going to talk about the definition of menopause. Menopause is the permanent Cessation of menstruation. And that is diagnosed retrospectively after 12 consecutive months without a period.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon 4:02
The mean age of natural menopause is about 51. And by the way, women spend roughly 40% of their life post-menopausal. That is a lot of time. Just because you're going through menopause doesn't mean your muscle mass or your strength or your body composition has to change. I look at my mom, she has gone through menopause. And I remember growing up, I mean, I don't even know when she went through menopause because I never heard anything about it. Her weight didn't change, her training didn't change.

How do estrogen, testosterone and FSH each affect metabolism during menopause?

Dr. Gabrielle Lyon 4:36
I had no idea. Now that you have some confidence that it doesn't have to mean it's the beginning of the end, we do have to address why muscle becomes non-negotiable.
