Welcome to episode seven hundred and eighteen of the world's greatest writing podcast. Today's program is a heterogeneous one. In part one, I share an interview with the Pulitzer Prize winning justice writer Gilbert King. Whose latest book? Bone Valley Represents Gilbert moving from historical justice writing into recent historical justice that carries him profoundly into the present. The book is based on a podcast of the same name, and that podcast is better than this one. If you haven't checked it out, I recommend you do so. In part two of today's episode, I share a book launch event for two of my friends. Larley Barr and Eric Deckers. This event was MC'd by yours truly and held at the Carewack Project of Orlando.

So this is John King and I'm joined by Gilbert King, friend of the show for many years. Right. No relation, right? Uh nothing we can find. We haven't dug down on that. Okay. Probably no relation. So you're on book tour for Bone Valley, which is a book based on your award winning podcast, which really has blown me away. I think it might be the first podcast that's made me cry. Oh. Join the club. And this isn't what you wanted to do. As a writer, you cover historical justice and nonfiction. Your specialty seems to be Uh Problems with justice in living memory but not currently ongoing. And you found yourself In a kind of a true crime situation.
Yeah.
Did and you know it's it's interesting when you look at like this this whole thing happens in nineteen eighty seven. That is kind of history, you know, but like I happened to be alive at the time and I was in Florida at the time too. And so it I I'm interviewing people thinking I'm doing this historical stuff and like everyone's younger than me. And then I was like, Oh, this is really bad. But yeah, I'm used to doing like the the pre civil rights era, forties and fifties stuff. just dealing with documents, I never get to really talk to people. And I think it was just a matter of like You know, once I'd met Leo and heard him talk and and heard him like describe the these moments in his life that are just so dramatic and so horrible, really, I knew that his voice was something that was just
Very persuasive and powerful. And I just got got to thinking about like, well it's I I these are gonna not be great in the quote marks on the page. Like you gotta hear his voice crack, that Boston accent, you know, this fish out of water coming to Florida and all of a sudden finds himself accused of a murder that he didn't commit. It was just really compelling and I and I just thought to myself I'd started listening to some podcasts and I thought maybe there's a way to do this as a podcast so that other people can hear what I just heard. And it makes sense. If you're doing research, you kind of want the audio of what everyone is saying. Oh yeah. And so if you can make sure the audio is good enough.
