Welcome back to the Dylan Gemelli podcast. I am really, really looking forward to this conversation today.
I've had some really good animated, in-depth conversations with my guests today.
Chapter 2: How does Dr. Beck define the Balance Protocol?
And I have to tell you, I hit it off with my guests on a different level because we have such a same mindset about just telling you what you need to hear and not what you want to hear. And I think that that is one of the main things that has drawn me to you, brother. And I appreciate you coming here to see me doing this in person. So thank you for that. Thank you for inviting me, man.
I needed a little trip out to the desert. Absolutely. Well, I got a little dry nose, you know, this Arizona, I'm a Florida boy. So, you know, perfect. Remember, my throat might be a little off here. I can't say enough about my guest today. I'm going to try to give you the intro you deserve, but I can't really sum it up into words, but he's a physician. He's a clinical researcher.
He's a world renowned authority in integrative and functional medicine.
Chapter 3: What are the common misconceptions about health on social media?
He's got 30, yes, three zero years of professional clinical experience, and he's not that old. So that tells you he's been going and over a hundred thousand patient encounters across six continents. Now, one of the things we're going to talk about today is he is the creator of the Balance Protocol, which I have been blessed now to learn about that we're going to talk about.
But it's a whole systems wellness approach, and it enables you to understand how your unique biochemistry holds the keys to moving you to ultimate well-being. He's a leading expert in functional nutrition, epigenetics, nutraceutical science. I could go on and on and on. He's a sought after speaker. He's got a damn sweet book. He's got some products to talk about.
So my friends, welcome Dr. Anthony Beck. nice oh love it love it i'm known for my intros bro that's all i'm good at so about all that that's not how you got the number one baby oh man look you know the biohacking industry you know the health the supplement all of it it all there's some great people and there's some bad actors yeah What's your mission? Well, and that's just it.
I mean, at the end of the day, I've been a clinician. I haven't been working on getting famous and working on becoming great in my craft and, you know, training other clinicians around the world and balance protocol.
Chapter 4: How important is diet in achieving optimal health?
And so that way we can get fantastic clinical outcomes. Right. Yes, I'm a capitalist, but I'm a contrarian Christian and constitutionalist for all my C's. But I'm all in there while we're getting to know each other. But the thing is, is with that, is that I have had the blessing of people seeking me out when all of that N equals one and quantum and biohacking goes awry.
Because if there's power in mechanisms and various molecules, supplements, protocols, and so forth, that means they exert an effect on the body. Well, most of the time, people are exploring those things as they should. I'm a big advocate of a person taking control of their health care and without any quantification. Yeah.
They're really just going, oh, well, I heard, you know, microplastics, but they're not testing for them. Well, I heard about mycotoxins, but okay, well, I'm doing a mycotoxin test, and then I'm going to detox, and then they're doing detoxes, and then it's parasites, and it's heavy metals, and it's candida, and it's all these things. Could totally be true. But they're just trying things.
And I applaud that because you don't give up hope, right? And what's so funny is, is when I stand up for certain things out there on the, because being an integrative, you know, physician, I embrace the good of, you know, both sides, if you will, you know, the holistic, you know, I'm a naturopath and a doctor of oriental medicine by education.
Chapter 5: What role does the mind-body connection play in health?
So that's where the doctor part comes from. So I'm not a medical doctor, so I don't deal in prescriptions or treating disease. It's never been my model. But being in the integrated and functional medicine realms, you get your hands in a lot of things for Haitians who want to try things. It's a different demographic.
You know, there's a certain amount of people who will only go conventional medicine and there's other people that will only go this. And that's a sad place to be. And I understand both for doing it. One side is like, well, these guys are quacks or not a real doctor. I get all that.
And then there's like, oh my gosh, I would never go see another doctor again because all they do is push down drugs and everything. So they both are true. Those are their, that's their encounters, their story. And so I've heard all those. I tell people famously that my patients have been my greatest teachers.
Chapter 6: How does Dr. Beck differentiate between integrative and conventional medicine?
All right. So yes, I've earned like 23 letters at the end of my name, but I don't use any of them because I'm a, I'm a person who has gotten into the stories of so many patients. And they tell me what they've tried and they've done this and they've done that. And when the failures happen, they don't post those on social media. Everybody's always talking about, hey, I tried this and it was great.
But then when things go awry, I have one right now down in Columbia.
Mm-hmm.
He heard about taking some prednisone and he started taking prednisone because of histamine reactions and stuff. And he was N equals one in it. And lo and behold, he hits me up on WhatsApp. This is literally just two weeks ago and asking me to basically save his life down there. And I told him, of course, go to the hospital. Yeah. Okay. Because he was taking 30 milligrams a day.
Chapter 7: What is the significance of personalized health assessments?
No. And people don't realize that like prednisone is what we call four times physiologic. Right. So it's the same thing as 120. Okay. Ish. Um, which is ironic, real sidebar. I mean, we can go forever. That's actually how I got into this field is because my mother had a nasal infection. She went to the doctors when she was younger and they gave her a shot of prednisone, put her into a coma.
When she came out of the coma, she was a type 1 diabetic. Wow. But now check this out. I love prednisone. It's a fantastic medication.
Chapter 8: How can listeners apply the insights from this episode to their own health journeys?
When used properly. That's correct. There's a great book called The Safe Uses of Cortisol. Yeah, that changed my life. So anyways, so this gentleman, a friend and patient of mine, we have to do a titration program, which just didn't stop him cold turkey. But the moral of the story is he was trying it without any testing or looking at it. And now he's paying the price.
So we've got him stabilized and he's back home. He's doing fantastic. We've got him down to 12 and a half milligrams. Anyways. So that is my passion, is to give patients a clinical framework and a method that can guide them in these things. It's the order of operations. It's not whether this is right or wrong. It's just here's where it falls into play. Right.
So that's the long answer to a short question.
so you said integrative and a lot of people hear these terms naturopathic integrative and you know i get it average everyday person doesn't know what that means yeah so when you say integrative what does that actually mean what does that consist of for you does that mean that you're taking each sides of the equation piecing them together and you're kind of like the guy that has the answers that utilizes all aspects because like you said some people go one way some people go the other i always feel that it's best to
Stay down the middle and use all your options. Right. Because they're both having positives and obviously having negatives. Absolutely correct. And so that's what that is. So there's different terms. Yeah. You know, complementary alternative medicine. Yes. That's a department within, you know, that. I mean, so it's in medicine. That's there. So integrative is exactly that. It integrates.
conventional allopathic modalities with things that work and are evidence-based. Okay. But it's also limited. It can be pretty obtuse on a lot of things. But like, for instance, there's even, you know, board certified, you know, uh, plastic surgeons that we use Arnica and Arnica is a homeopathic, right? And we know that it works. Okay. Things like that. Okay.
But then there's some people that will say, well, we're, I'm going to use, uh, you know, this herb for this disease state. We see that in the holistic. That's why I call it holistic. That's my, I have to beat up on it. Because you just get this whole list of stuff. Right.
I remember back in the day in the health food stores, you probably remember this too, that prescription for nutritional healing by that couple who wrote it. Yes. And people go on there and they go, oh, I have psoriasis when you take all of these. So it was really good for selling supplements and it still happens. And you could tell that in my functional world. So I was one of the early people
Pioneers and adopters in that back in right around circa 1994, 95. Oh, wow. At the end of the day, it's grown. And then people use the term root cause medicine. These terms are clumsy tools because you'll say root cause, but then they name things like inflammation. Right. But that's like saying automobile. Right. Of course. Right. So a motorcycle is an automobile.
