This is the Best of the Herd with Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports Radio.
Ah, here we go. One of my favorite shows of the year. It's Draft Day Monday. We're live. In Chicago, it's The Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be watching or listening, whatever the platform is, thanks for making us part of your day. So on Monday after the draft, I'm not going to go out and tell you what happens to a six-rounder from Maryland.
Chapter 6: What insights does Matt Hasselbeck provide about the draft decisions?
I don't know. So to me, my certainty, my accuracy goes up. I consider all sorts of things. Did you hire a new coordinator? Do you have a new coach? I mean, the biggest thing the Broncos did several years was not the draft or free agency. It was hiring Sean Payton and getting rid of Nat Hackett. Jim Harbaugh or John Harbaugh changes everything.
So to me, if you take, do you have a major coaching change? Who are your best two coaches?
Chapter 7: How do coaching changes impact NFL team performance?
Free agents, guys in the league that are productive. And give me your top three or four draft picks. I can make a pretty good guess on how a third-round draft pick is going to do. That, to me, is how you judge Monday after the draft. Not a draft grade, because you just don't know. Nobody wants to hear this, but the parents you get as a kid will dictate to a large degree how your life turns out.
And where you land in the NFL will dictate how your career goes. Sorry, there are bad parents and bad NFL teams. So to me, three drafts stuck out. Three off seasons stood out.
Chapter 8: What are the implications of drafting strategies in the NFL?
Number one, the New York Giants. So I get a massive head coaching upgrade in John Harbaugh and his staff. I get, you know, non-premium positions, but Isaiah Likely and Tremade Edmonds are positions of need for the Giants. So two starters in free agency that I think will excel. And then I thought their first four picks were amazing.
Malachi Fields, a wide receiver from Notre Dame, saw him a lot, is one of the best value receivers. picks in the draft. He will be eventually a starter. The first three guys, Maui, Noah, Hood, Reese, they'll be day one starters, I would presume. So that's a different team. That's a losing organization. I see major upgrade in leadership,
production from guys already in the league, and three, potentially four starters. That's a different football team. So to me, that stood out. The other one, the Raiders. The Raiders go from an old defensive coach who felt a little bit out of his... generation to a young, clever, highly respected offensive coach, Clint Kubiak. Sea change.
They got the best free agent signing to me in the entire offseason. Tyler Linderbaum with a rookie quarterback. They also got Jalen Naylor, a wide receiver from Minnesota, who if you have a fantasy draft coming up in August, keep your eye on him. And then there's three draft picks for them. Remember, the Raiders are not like the Jets. The Raiders have really good players at premier positions.
Max Crosby, Colton Miller, a running back, a tight end they love. They've got players. Now they've got an all-pro center. But they picked up a safety in a corner, especially the corner if he remains healthy. Those are star players. So I think the Raiders feel... Leadership, quarterback, who has the best center arguably in the sport, a sharp GM.
Yeah, I know we don't love the ownership, but the Raiders feel different to me. And the other one, now this is totally different, where I've already got a great culture, a great coach, and a great defensive coordinator. Kansas City, though, missed the playoffs. So now I get Mahomes coming back. They had four specific needs. So this was a different situation.
Kansas City had specific, very few specific needs. They got the best running back in free agency, Kenneth Walker, check. The best cornerback in the draft, Mansour Delane, moved up as predicted on their show, check. Chris Jones did not have a great year. They put Peter Woods from Clemson a year ago. He would have been drafted top 10, check.
And then R. Mason Thomas is sort of the Reuben Bain of later in the draft. Not great measurables, but if you watch the Oklahoma play this year, he's like Reuben Bain. He outplays his measurables. That is a really, really good football player. So again, with the Giants, I really got impressed by the leadership and their draft picks.
With the Raiders, I get the center, the quarterback, and a clever offensive coach. Feels different. With Kansas City, I've got a lot of things intact, but it was a very specific draft. Now, you could say, what about Cleveland and what about the Jets? Well, Cleveland and the Jets, I like the ingredients. I don't trust the chef.
