All right, welcome to Hoops Tonight here at The Volume. Happy Tuesday, everybody. Hope all of you guys are having a great week so far. Well, we got a bombshell today. LeBron James, through his agent, has announced that he is not playing for the Los Angeles Lakers next year. Today will be the first of what will probably be several videos the rest of this week to cover free agency. Obviously, I wanted to react to the LeBron news later today. Who knows what will go down in free agency? We could have some stuff. I eventually am going to hit on the John Morant trade to Portland, not in this video, but we will hit it at a later video in the next day or two, all sorts of chaos around the league today. I'm just going to be talking about my reaction to the LeBron James news.

What does LeBron James' departure from the Lakers mean for the NBA?
So LeBron James, through his agent, has announced he will be playing next year, but not for the Lakers. Now, here's the thing. I had been hearing for a couple weeks now a lot of noise, and I'm not a reporter. I don't confess to be or profess to be the most connected dude in the world. It's not really my game. You guys know I'm more about just breaking down the basketball, but I had been hearing for a while that, that the Lakers didn't really want LeBron James. Specifically, as they had been looking at their team construct and moving forward, they did not factor him into their plans. I don't think that necessarily meant the same thing as they wouldn't take him back, but it was shaping up as like, we're going to go about our business differently.
we're going to build a basketball team. And if LeBron happens to be there at the end, because whatever's left over, we got for him. Sure. Maybe, but we're not going to make any decision this summer or about the future of our franchise that factors in LeBron James. That was what I had been hearing for weeks. I had a conversation with my buddy Pete Zayas from Laker film room. And he had been making a point to me that I think was really sound in the sense that he was saying like a lot of people were thinking LeBron was coming back because of the fact that there were these three facts that kind of just made it seem like it made sense for the Lakers to come back to, to, to proceed with LeBron. Basically LeBron,
LeBron wants to stay in LA. He loves it there. And he's 42 years old. So like no 42 year old wants to move. LeBron loves LA. So obviously he should stay in LA. Right. And then to the Lakers, they need talent and they are trying to compete with Luka Doncic and feel a certain amount of urgency to play or to build a roster that is talented enough to compete for a championship in a short term window, because you're on year three with Luca, right? Item number three, LeBron James is still really good at basketball, like easily a top 15 player in this league, no worse than a top 20 player in this league, probably a top 10 to 12 playoff player in this league. And you were going to be able to get them at a discount.
Like Woody, what would that number look like? I don't know, but probably less than $20 million a year. And who isn't going to take a top 12 player in the playoffs for less than 20 million a year, right?
