Chad Johnson 0:01
Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, Nate? Huge news. We created our own podcast called Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it.
Unknown 0:14
We're the first people to do podcasts.
Chad Johnson 0:16
Yeah, a pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special.
Unknown 0:21
So how did we actually come up with the name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it, and... Well, we were thinking of originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers.
Chad Johnson 0:38
This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey, Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast.
Daniel Cormier 0:52
Oh, wow. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it.
Daniel! Come on!
Daniel Cormier 1:12
What's up, guys? Welcome to a brand new episode of the Daniel Cormier Show, brought to you by Total Wireless, the official wireless provider of UFC. They are in your corner with unlimited 5G data that will not slow you down. Now, that's a total power move. Hey, guys, you know I like to be joined by tremendous people, athletes on this show. But when you talk about a guy... who didn't just play the sport, who became the sport and became the show, Chad Chosinko Johnson is at the top of that list. But his story did not start with touchdowns and celebrations. It started in Liberty City, Miami, raised by his mom and his grandmother, a teacher of 40 years, kept him grounded, had him in church every single weekend.
Daniel Cormier 1:55
I know about that. My mama had me in church all week. But the path wasn't clear for Chad. He didn't just go to some big university. He ended up in Langston. That was my old stomping ground right around Stillwater. He got kicked out there for fighting. Then Chad had one more shot, and he got that chance at Oregon State. But after that, after Oregon State, the world met him. The world met Ocho Cinco. He wasn't just a receiver. He was a personality. He was a disruptor, a guy who refused to be anything but himself no matter what. The fine was no matter how much they criticized him. But then you saw evolution. Chad's still entertaining. He's still real. But there's perspective today. So this isn't about football.
Daniel Cormier 2:38
I want you guys to get to know the guy behind the name. Not Ocho Cinco. I want you to get to know Chad Johnson. And today we're joined by my guy, Chad Johnson. What's up, baby?
Chad Johnson 2:47
How you doing, bro? I mean, I'm good.
Daniel Cormier 2:49
I'm good. I'm so glad you're doing this, man. Thank you.
Chad Johnson 2:51
I'm glad to be in this space. It's one that I haven't had opportunity to be in much. So I'm happy for the opportunity.
Daniel Cormier 2:58
Chad, when I was getting into your story, you know, we all a lot of us have a lot of the same background, right? A mom, a grandmother, someone that really like they throw everything into you. At a time whenever it's kind of hard, right? Because we're not growing up with much. But growing up in Liberty City, your mom and your grandmother, they played a big part in your upbringing.
Chad Johnson 3:18
Yeah, especially grandma. Grandma, very strict. She ruled with an iron fist. Growing up in Liberty City, in the 80s, 90s, obviously you understand that's the dope era. Yeah, it was bad. Especially during that time, it was really bad. Obviously, when you're that young, you're influenced easily by your surroundings and your upbringing. And she did everything she could to keep me from going on that other side of the train track.
Daniel Cormier 3:40
How did they keep you inside? Because all you want to do is play, right? You're an active kid.
Chad Johnson 3:46
That's what we did. Throw up tackle. I don't know if you remember throw up tackle back then. You're at the park. There were two parks I grew up on that were close in the area, Moore Park and Charles Hadley Park. So outside of that, you know, at the pool, swimming, tennis, keeping me active and everything, piano lessons, saxophone lessons, baseball.
