Have you got a pair, or maybe you don't, but you've seen them all in your feed and people talking about them or in the news? If you have no idea what I'm talking about, basically the technology is kind of like a phone on your face. You can use AI, you can record, you can talk to it, you can listen to all Audio and you can even live stream on some of these uh devices. And they've become really popular this year with Meta in particular selling millions. And like with all new technology, there's pros and cons. But some experts out there are warning us and saying that the cons are actually outweighing the benefits, particularly because of the data access, but also because people now can
film really covertly without anyone's consent. And this is the conversation that I want to have with you today because, you know, obviously we talk about dating and we talk about having sex and we're hearing stories and we're seeing footage now being uploaded to socials of people approaching people on dates, pick-up artists using content, and sex acts being filmed without any consent at all. And Someone that's been looking into this and researching it is Dr. Militza Stilnovich. She's from the University of Sydney, who is a postdoctoral researcher, and her research focuses on technological harm, digital extremism, and the governance of emerging technologies. She's recently researched smart glasses and pickup artists.
And so that's what you're about to hear. I had a conversation with her around her research. What we need to know about these smart glasses. glasses and some of the concerns that she has around consent. Um, find out a bit more about pickup artists and what we know about the content that's getting uploaded onto socials, what the current laws are, what the government is doing to try and keep us safe when we think about some of the harms that this technology can cause, but also what we need to know if we are dating right now or having sex or out there and, you know, things that we should be looking for and what what our rights are and what we can do. So it's a really, really important chat. Bit of a heads up, we will be talking about non consensual acts.

Uh but yeah, let's get into it. Dr. Melitza, thank you so much for coming on the hookup. Thanks for having me. So for someone who doesn't know what smart glasses are, can you please explain them to us?
Yeah, so I like to refer to smart glasses as computers for your face or vessels for AI learning. So depending on the brand, uh, you'll have AI-enabled software in there, you'll have recording capabilities, so camera and audio. You'll have geotagging, mapping and locations, live translation. You'll be able to access your emails while you're walking down the street. And so think of it as your smartphone, but around your point of view.
What are they physically? look like because some of them that are out there right just look like a normal pair of Sunnies. So can you please describe like what exactly are the ones that are out there on display at the moment and you're able to purchase but where's the camera and that kind of thing and what people can like try and look out for when they're looking at them.
Oh, this is the scary part because there are so many brands out there now. I'm sure that some listeners would be aware that back in the day there used to be Google Glass and these smart glasses iterations used to be quite cyborg and daggy with the camera on the outside. Nowadays they're looking very wayfarer because uh, for example, Meta has uh coupled up with some fashion labels and made them very trendy.
