A spring morning in June 2001. An eight-year-old girl gathers moss for her grandmother's hanging baskets in a forest near Ballinamore in County Leitrim. The child lets out a scream. She had stumbled upon a body. The remains belonged to an Enniskillen businessman, Gerry McGinley, and he had clearly been murdered.
Gerry McGinley was 34 years old. He had been missing for 10 months. But even at this stage, police already had a fair idea. Well, they had a fair idea that he had been killed and they had a fair idea who had done it.
He had been killed by his own wife, Julie, and her lover. But it wasn't a simple tale. It involved sex, lies, blackmail and videotape and included many prominent people in Fermanagh.
It probably would have never came out if the murder never happened and if these people were supposed to keep paying the blackmail money out.

This is a story, I think, once we begin to talk about it, that people will begin to remember. It was a very, very high profile. It was 25 years ago. It was a very, very high profile case. There was a lot of talk about it, and there's been a lot of lines written about it since. However, other people will have completely forgotten about it. So let's start, I think, when the body was found. A child finds the body.
Yes. So at this stage, this was June 2001, and Gerry McGinley was 34 years old. He had been missing for 10 months. But even at this stage, police already had a fair idea. Well, they had a fair idea that he had been killed, and they had a fair idea who had done it. In fact, they had actually arrested and charged Gerry. Gerry McGinley's wife, Julie McGinley. He was 29 at the time, as well as what would be alleged at the time was her lover, Michael Monaghan, a businessman who worked with Gerry and Julie at their furniture store in Fermanagh. It's unusual. to press charges without a body? Yes, this will be one of the first times this happened in the history of the island of Ireland, not just Northern Ireland, because obviously, how do you prove a murder without a body?
It's a lot more difficult. But, you know, it can be done, but it's obviously wholly circumstantial. Just note, having read through the story, that Gerry McGinley's parents were off the... Yeah, after a few months of searching and ruling out all the potential possibilities, they kind of resigned themselves to the fact that he had all likelihood of being killed. And they actually had contacted several clairvoyants in an attempt to find his body, but to no avail. And it was found essentially by chance by a young girl.
A young girl, an eight-year-old girl, she was out gathering moss. And she finds, among foliage, a skeleton, partly covered with black plastic sheeting and skull practically caved in.
