How could someone come home, tell you they love you, laugh with you, make plans for the future, and still hide an affair?
That contradiction is one of the most disturbing parts of infidelity. It can leave you questioning whether the loving moments were real, whether your partner was secretly a completely different person, and whether your entire relationship was some kind of carefully constructed illusion.
In this episode, I explain how compartmentalization allows someone to separate their marriage, affair, values, and self-image into different mental categories. We will look at how partial truths, selective attention, and self-protective stories can help someone continue seeing themselves as a good person while repeatedly making choices that violate their own stated values.
I also explain why describing an affair as “one mistake” can hide the many smaller decisions that made it possible, what genuine accountability actually requires, and why betrayed partners should look for more than affection or transparency when deciding whether someone is becoming trustworthy.
