What is the AFL’s plan for introducing ‘Wharfie Time’ at the Grand Final?

Josh Gard 0:00
Sorry, sorry we're so far away. For the lighting we we thought it would be nice. No there's no intimidation tactics here.
Wade Spaulding 0:11
Like a job interview. Yeah, this is an interrogation. I'm sorry.
Josh Gard 0:22
Oh wow
Wade Spaulding 0:25
Um see you over there, April, Andrew Dillon, thank you so much for joining us. We've seen you twice in twenty four hours, so it's it seems a bit rare for us. Um we've got some hard hitting questions. Oh that's why we got you in the boardroom.
Josh Gard 0:35
I like it.
Wade Spaulding 0:35
Yeah. Um let's start with the main one.
Josh Gard 0:37
Yeah. Um how much consideration was actually given to Worfe time at the grand final?
Andrew Dillon 0:42
Well, i Wolfie time is still under consideration. I think they there has been some reporting which hasn't been accurate, which I'm very surprised about. So uh the AFL's meeting with the clubs later today about a number of operational issues and one of them is what happens post goals during the grand final. So not ruled out but not ruled in.
Wade Spaulding 1:01
So you're saying like they might have the opportunity to potentially go, All right, one of the goal celebrations happens to be Hell's Bells or something like that. Might might be the workaround or something like that.
Andrew Dillon 1:10
Something like and I wouldn't call it a workaround. What we're what we're trying to do with both of the clubs, as we've had in the finals this year, for the home finals, it's looked like a home game. So when we're out at Frio, we've had those, you know, the the goal celebrations up in Brisbane. They had um Country Road for Charlie's goals and the like. So what we're looking at for the granny where it is a neutral one is can we get the best of both worlds? And really what we're trying to do is, you know, what gives the fans what they want.
Wade Spaulding 1:34
Okay, I see what you've done here. You've tried to butter us up with what we want as an answer straight away. This did not time out by the time this podcast comes out.
Josh Gard 1:40
Um just on the grand final quickly, uh understanding that a lot of tickets get allocated to MCC, AFL membership, um seems to be a big chunk of corporates that see the members a few members miss out. You know, I'm very biased uh with some friends and family in Perth that um haven't been able to secure tickets. Is there a restructure of allocation that would ever be considered? Considered in the future.
Andrew Dillon 2:04
Yeah, I mean a as you say, we've got a hundred thousand seats stadium, but a quarter of the ground goes to the MCC members. We've got a quarter of the ground for the AFL members. So out of that fifty thousand, seventeen and a half to each of the clubs, I think it is at the moment.

Is the AFL seriously considering shortening quarter lengths for future seasons?

Andrew Dillon 2:17
And that's up from um fifteen a couple of years ago. So we have taken Some of those tickets out of the corporate allocations. There are you know requirements that we have and the clubs have, but it's something that's continually under review. But what I do want on the weekend is as many, you know, Fremantle and Brisbane Lions fans in the in the ground as possible. Do you have any any tickets? Jay's the man to talk to there. Sweet.
Wade Spaulding 2:45
I know this is an embargo, but we're gonna come back to you on that. I don't know if we've ever
Johnny Smacks 2:48
mentioned how much we love your work. Um
Wade Spaulding 2:52
There's so many things we could hit like uh Okay, probably my first one, um and we'll go through random as as long as we have time. Um Quarter length. Has it ever been a real consideration to be an actual change in the quarter length? Because anecdotally, me amongst my friends, no one's ever gone to me. Other than if they're bored, like the 'cause the game's boring. No one said, Oh, I wish the game was twenty minutes ago. I'm saying is there ever a real consideration from the AFL to say, Oh, we should actually shorten the um
Andrew Dillon 3:23
quarters. I mean, we had an example during twenty twenty with COVID where we went from a twenty minute quarter to I think it was seventeen or seventeen and a half minutes, did make a bit of a change to the length of the game, but what we have found is that the 20 minutes of playing time is really important at the moment. What we are trying to do though is minimize that sort of the dead time all the time on so that if you can just get the ball ups quicker, the boundary throwings quicker, less secondary stoppages and the like.
