Please welcome Marty Sheargold.
Yeah, I haven't heard that name on the radio for a while. Right, guys, Marty, a great radio broadcaster, had a great, long-lasting career. But, you know, when you talk for hours and hours a day, not everything everyone says is going to land with some folks. But Marty's taking a break. I've seen him mowing the yard. He's sick of that beautiful lawn, by the way.
And he's back on the comedy tour, the red card tour.
Chapter 2: What prompted Marty Sheargold's return to the spotlight?
You can go to list.com.au if you want to get yourself tickets secure. Marty. Oh, look at you two.
This is so lovely to finally get a chance to spend some time in a studio together. Isn't it wonderful? Jack, you look stunning, by the way. Doesn't she?
Thank you. I love the name of the tour, Red Card, perfect name for it. Do you touch on it a lot in the show?
No, don't, Jack, because it's 12 months ago. I think it only affected me, really, and the kids. And other than that, I just think... I'm hoping people have moved on from it because you're right. You're right, Kyle. It was just, you know, for whatever you thought of it, it was just a passing comment.
Hey, I did notice your old show that you used to do when you were with Ricky Lee. Were you with Ricky Lee and Tim? No, I never worked with Ricky Lee. I was with Tim and Kate Ritchie. Yeah.
The OG. I guess it's always been a great show.
You used to work with Fifi as well. That was a great show as well. Yeah, Fifi and I worked together for years together.
Is there any chance... I know she's doing breakfast, but, like, would you guys ever work together and, like, do that show again?
Well, there was a bit of talk about Fee and I doing a podcast. Now, I don't know if that was somebody else's idea. I don't know whose idea it was.

Chapter 3: What personal challenges did Marty face during his exit?
Yeah. I don't want someone drifting in and going, have you thought about this? Or that classic... How do you think today went, John? That's right.
That's the difference. Do you prefer working on your own or with someone?
Well, to be honest, Jack, I've never done it. So I did a pilot last week and it'll never see the light of day because I listened back to it and I was like, oh, no, this is no good. There were parts of it that were funny. Are you being tough on yourself, though? I don't know. Are you tough on yourself?
Well, sometimes, like, you get... It's good, like, because comedy comes, I think, more easily when you do have that other person to sort of bounce it off with, you know. It's hard to do it on your own.
It is. But also, I just think observations are observations, you know what I mean?
Yeah, yeah.
And it's an interesting time that we're living in, isn't it? You know, free speech-wise and what is and isn't offensive. And, you know, I went through a real mess of a thing.
Yeah. How did you feel going through that, like that time for you?
Like personally, like emotionally, mentally. Personally. Were you distraught or how did you feel?

Chapter 4: How did Marty's father's death impact his career decisions?
Well, I was having this conversation not long ago, actually, and it was just like, you know what I was great at? Starting drinking. And I was terrible at stopping drinking. That's right. It just never stopped. You just kept going. I wasn't waking up every day going, if I don't have a drink, I'm going to lose my mind. But if I had three beers that day, I'd have to have 37 beers.
I never understood people who would get up after two beers and go, well, I've got to shoot home, I've got to do the school pick-up. See, I would have cancelled the school pick-up and tried to go out for two days. And somehow fit work in there as well.
So did you do that, like, all the time, or was it just like a weekend thing, binge?
It was just, well, because of the hours we were working, it was sort of like, yeah, if you got the chance to really hook in, I would absolutely make the most of that opportunity.
Yeah, I get that. The tour's back, the alcohol's gone. The tour's back, the alcohol's gone.
You're looking tanned. I like the tan. I've been mowing. I've been parenting for the first time in years.
How's that going? How are all your kids?
17 and 15. Oh, it's better late than never. It was lovely to meet them. And you've done a great job, those kids, of raising themselves. I love that. What gets lost in this whole conversation is that my whole thing is an act. You're a comedian, right?
This is what you do.

Chapter 5: What lessons did Marty learn from the media's portrayal of him?
But, yeah, it's like that. It's like, oh, so-and-so said this. I'm like, don't tell me. I don't care. And I don't want to feel less about that person because the other thing we all know is that none of this business really is personal. It's personal. And I don't want to diminish what we do, but it is we are filling a lot of time. I've been involved in some of the great pylons over the years.
God, if I said one more thing about Andrew O'Keefe, it was going to be ridiculous. You know what I'm saying?
Did you really go hard on him at the time?
Oh, mate, I went to town. You know, Weinstein and, you know, all of that stuff. And I had targets as well that were lazy, like I used to always have a go at Shane Jacobson just for my own fun because I was bored shitless. Oh, Jackie, tell him what happened.
He's a random person to target. Poor Shane.
Can I just say, Marty? We had a moment there too. It was awful.
We had finished the show and we were off air. A producer comes in and says, oh, we've got Shane Jacobson down the line soon. He's doing an interview. And Carl said something like, I don't want to talk to that pissant, no-name C-lister.
Oh, yeah. I'm waiting around to talk to a guy that did a movie about dunnies. No thanks. And then his little voice comes up on the cue. Oh, you've got your mic on. G'day, it's Shane here.
He was actually really quite upset, though. He really was. He took it pretty personally.

Chapter 6: How does Marty feel about the comedy industry today?
And I said, and mate, look, He goes, you know, because my whole angle on him was he never says no to anything. Like he just does everything. He's in the IGA ads, right? He does everything. And that was my angle. It's like you're allowed to say no to some things in life. And then I would just get on that bent and keep going.
And then he said to me at the airport, he goes, you know, I do say no to some things.
I'm sure you do.
I'm sure you do.
He is a nice guy.
He is lovely. And then we did that classic Australian thing of going, we'll have a beer, mate. Next time we see each other, we'll have a beer. Never happened. That beer never happened, did it? No. And it never will. But it's nice to be able to say to him, look, none of it's personal. And that's what I took from the situation I was in. I never felt any of it was personal.
I know we've all got jobs to do. And people were genuinely offended by what I said.
You're nicer than I am. I take everything personally.
Yeah, Carl builds a list.
