How can we build successful careers without burning out?
Hi, I'm Francesca Rudkin, and welcome to Season 6 of our New Zealand Herald podcast, The Little Things. And I'm Louise Erie, and as you know, in this podcast, we talk to experts and find out all the little things you need to know to improve different areas of your life. We cut through all the confusion and overload of information out there to try and Help simplify our lives.
I was just thinking, there is a lot of information out there at the moment, isn't there? I mean, this podcast is going out at the beginning of July. The election is about four months away or so. It's just coming at it fucking fast. I'm still trying to work out how we even got to July. Everyone's going into school holidays. It's just, I don't know, this year sort of we started on, it sort of started with a hiss and a roar and it's never really let up, has it?
No, and I always think about this when they divide the years into quarters and go, that's, you know, we're into the third quarter. I know. How did we get here? How did we get here?
What personal experiences influenced Nick Petrie's work on burnout?
Wasn't it just the summer holidays? But anyway, I hope everyone's winters are going okay and, you know, bravo to all of you clever people who booked some European summer holidays at some point. Or just taking yourself to an island for a week. Yeah. Good on you. Again, the year went too fast for me to do that. I know. We'll get our shit together at some point. We will. But look, before we introduce today's guest, we want to do a quick hello to those of you who have been tuning in through the brand new New Zealand Herald app that has just been launched.
So if you haven't had a chance to explore it yet, you can now listen to this show as well as watch Herald Now along with a range of video podcasts in a dedicated watch section of the app.
There are also some really handy new features worth checking out, including My Herald, where you can personalise your news feed by choosing the topics and writers you actually want to hear from, which could be useful in election year. It's all about making things a bit more tailored to you, definitely worth a wee look.
Right, I am so excited about our guest today, and it's not just because he is a trail runner. His name is Nick Petrie.
What is the difference between pressure and stress?
He has written a book called Burn Bright, and as host of Newstalk ZB's Sunday session, and after doing... six series of The Little Things, I have been sent and read so many books on burnout and stress and productivity and focus and attention and play and rest and sleep and how to work smarter and live a more balanced life. And I think that this is probably the best one yet. It is simple, relatable and really practical. And I think that you had the same response to reading the book too, Lou.
I did. There's something quite profound about the way Nick just presented all so simply. His message is clear and concise.
You keep texting me going, I'm a bit taken back at just how simple this is.
Yeah. I was expecting complex, I suppose, because I think we have had a plethora of complex experts. Not us. We find the nice, simple ones. But the ones, if you indulge in Instagram and that kind of thing, you can get way off track. So with his book, you can deep dive the whole thing if you want to.
How can we manage rumination to reduce stress?
There is a lot of really useful information there. Or like me, you can grab onto one or two things that resonate and are really appropriate for my current situation that I'm in. And in fact, I think I emailed you and I said something like... God, so sorry I haven't quite finished the Nick book. Well, you probably should, Lou. Everything's going on for you right now. It could be just what you need. And it was just what I needed. So I really leaned into it. I think that's when you said you'd forgotten about the podcast or something. I hadn't forgotten. I'd just gone to the next one in front of this one somehow. I don't know what I'd done, but anyway, it was wrong, everyone. And what I really liked about him is it's not all about self-optimization, which I've kind of got the ick for.
with that kind of thing.
What practical strategies can help prevent burnout?
There was something quite profound about the simplicity of Nick's message.
