hot off the back of India.

What is the Future of Investment and Trade (FIT) Partnership and who is attending?

Mike Hosking 0:01
More trade talks underway this week with the FIT, the FIT Partnership, bringing together 10 ministers, 100 delegates, 21 countries. So what is FIT? Ana Azevedo is the Executive Director or Executive Officer of the Latin America and New Zealand Business Council and is with us. Very good morning to you.
Ana Azevedo 0:17
Good morning. How are you?
Mike Hosking 0:18
Very well indeed. Thank you. So the future of investment and trade partnership is what FIT is. Is this a thing that's going anywhere or is this just a chat fest? What do you mean? Well, is it going anywhere? Is it going to turn up as something tangible like an FTA?
Ana Azevedo 0:36
It's a partnership. It's a non-binding conversation, negotiation. It's not meant to be like a formal FTA. What is a binding agreement? So this is the difference between different investment in space. It's a small, medium-sized trading economy getting together, aligned together in a maybe unstable world when you think of geopolitics.
Mike Hosking 1:05
What's the commonality of the countries involved?

How is FIT different from a formal free trade agreement (FTA)?

Mike Hosking 1:08
Is it just their size or are there other strands in there as well?
Ana Azevedo 1:13
There is always more to it than the size. We have to think about shared values, about common goals. So it's 17 countries, and I have to say that I'm more involved with the Latin America part of it than with the whole 20% investment in trade. But yeah, there is always more than just the size of the country.
Mike Hosking 1:35
Is it about generally free trade?
Ana Azevedo 1:42
Look, It's part of it, but again, you need more than just a free trade. And I think with all the countries that you develop, even like a free trade, if you need something more formal like CPPT, you are also looking for this other point, this other commonality. Because it's a lot of negotiations, conversations, years of... publishing common goals. So you don't go just for the size of the country to use that example.
Mike Hosking 2:15
Well, let's hope something good comes out of it.

Why are small and medium-sized economies grouping together at FIT?

Mike Hosking 2:16
Good luck with it. Nice to talk to you, Anna Azevedo. Out of the Latin American New Zealand Business Council, I apologise for the line. I hope you could hear at least the gist of it. But broadly speaking, it's a lot of small or medium-sized countries sort of joining together to do something productive.
