Motorsport fans, the race of champions comes to the country for the first time early next year. So drivers from different disciplines compete in identical cars. Uh this time the the Cake Tin in the Capitol. If you've never seen it, it's brilliant. Sebastian Vettel, Valkyrie Bothas are among those uh leading the charge. We've got Hayden Paddon will be there and uh a guy called Chaz Mostet, who if you follow supercars, uh is there as well and he is with us. Good to see you. Yeah, thanks for having me on this morning. And uh congratulations on the weekend at uh Talem Bend and the biblical weather conditions in which you had to deal with.
Yeah, it was uh only expected for one to two mil of rain, but somehow it meant one to two meters. So uh it was uh pretty pretty chaotic out there. Um yeah, we started eleventh, me and Fabian Coulthard, which is a fellow Kiwi uh from over here too, and he um I swear he had uh duck feet out there for the first fifty to sixty laps. He drove awesome and pretty much gave the car back up the pointy end and um yeah, somehow we were able to hold on for the end.
What do you like in Duro or Sprint, personally?
think the slightly older you get you really love the enduro spec so um it's just more watching t a team to come together there's so many more different elements to it you know than than a sprint race. We might have one pit stop in a sprint race but you know on the weekend we had say five across the race. So watching a whole team come together, um they're all kind of trying to be in sync from refuelers to tire changes to the engineers getting the strategy. I just like those elements that you need so many people to um to try and get the job Done.
You you won't like this, but I'm I'm a fan of Matt Payne. I think Matt Payne's sensational. As a seasoned pro yourself, w how do you rate him as a guy who's, you know, up and coming?
How did the extreme rain at Tallow Bend affect Chaz’s race strategy?
Oh yeah, clearly he's, you know, one of the top in our in our game at the moment and especially I think for since he burst onto the scenes, his talent is is second to none. So um uh always give Maddie a little bit of stick because I think he's uh pretty shy off the track and he's he probably uh I'm sure there's a bigger personality in there than what he uh sometimes shows, but but he put him behind the wheel and if he's um starting off the front row, he's gonna be a hard man to track down. So um I think this year his finals he's really found that strength in that car and he's gonna be really hard to stop. So um yeah looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.
What's your observation in this game? Is is it is it the the driver or the car or the combination? So is he uh d give him any car and he'll win or is it gotta be a bit of both?
Uh it has to be a hundred percent both. Like you need a good team around you to extract the most out and I think that's probably More important than than actually having the hundred percent talent at the end of the day because uh the car kind of controls us and we try to dance it around and if it's not in a window it's it's it's a pretty pretty tricky day at the office.
Tell me about the evolution of the sport. See, I followed it for years and I love it. So so and and you've been there since at least what, twenty twelve?
Uh yeah, well I've been in support categories for since twenty well, two thousand and eight, but then first got on the supercar scene in twenty thirteen.
How have those cars
changed? Well when I come in it was the first year of uh the Gen two cars and now we're up to Gen three. So um the biggest thing between those two um is just yeah, we lost a lot of aerodynamics in the car, about bit over sixty percent coming into this latest car. And um that's probably been the hardest thing to get our head around, especially 'cause we're still running a very similar tire. Um cars a little bit number, it's a little bit more trickier to try and work out where to find a lap time. Where the old car is you knew where you Lost a tenth of a second here or there just by the way the car felt. Um, but now we're just trying to visually sometimes see where we're losing time and where we're not doing the doing the best job.
