Why did Gin Wigmore move back to New Zealand?
gin wigmore is back with new music single is out tomorrow i believe there's an album to follow uh anyway she's with us good morning thank you do you know do you know i don't believe we've ever been in the studio face to face yes we have oh have we yes i hate it when this happens it's shocking i say stuff like i don't remember meeting and people go yes we did it was one of the greatest times of my life it was not that's simply not true Catch me, because we were going to interview, I think, last year. Okay. And either you cancelled or something that you were doing got cancelled, a festival or something.
Oh, maybe. Don't worry about it.
Because I've been doing some investigation of you. I was told you opened a deli.
I did. I did in Kingsland.
Which is in Auckland.
Yes.
Now, that then led me to believe that you might be living in New Zealand.
I am, yes. I'm living in New Zealand. I moved back about December 2024. So I've been here about a year and a half.
So you've been back ages. Yeah. Oh, for goodness sake. Yeah, I know. So last time, one of the times I talked to you, you were, of course, in Palm Springs. Yes. At the hotel.
Yes.
And how did we get from Palm Springs to New Zealand? To the deli in Kingsland.
Oh, look, you know, life has been lifing me very much lately. I moved back to L.A. I mean, I was pregnant with my second child out in Palm Springs, so I kind of couldn't be doing the go-between Los Angeles and Palm Springs anymore. And so moved back to LA and then ran a hotel out in Santa Monica for a while. And then was like, you know what? I'm just deeply not content with my marriage and with my life. And so then me and my husband separated. This is all breaking news to me.
This is all breaking news. Have you talked a lot about this?
No, this is the first time.
Seriously? Oh my God. You are breaking news. I suddenly feel like I'm a psychiatrist.
That's what most of my friends and family are like.
So your marriage split up and then you decided you would come back.
I'm going to come back, yeah. I felt like I needed – I miss New Zealand. I miss my roots. I miss having my kids grow up in this environment. L.A. was getting tighter and tighter to live, you know, harder. We were down in Venice Beach at this point, which was great. But just, I don't know, there's something about the – Freedom of that sort of childhood was getting less – it was getting harder to do in Los Angeles. So I wanted to have my kids grow up with knowing New Zealand and in their soul, in their spirit. And so it was time. And so me and my two boys moved back in December 2024 and then just sort of like was – As I say, like I was sort of on the, been on the wash cycle for the last year, just sort of figuring out what is my life?
How do I get back into music? How do I finish this record? And I did all those things and opened a deli and I feel like rooted in New Zealand now.
Oh, that's fantastic. And can I probe to the point was the marriage and the relationship and the issues surrounding it and all of that, had they been resolved? Are they resolved? Are they in an amicable issue?
Yeah, I mean, we're in the middle of a divorce right now, which is, you know, such a treat. But it's actually, it's good. I mean, you know what? He's, I will love my ex-husband till the day I die. He's such a good person. But we were just, we were kids when we met.
What led to Gin Wigmore's separation from her husband?
And we couldn't evolve together. And we're two lead singers. I mean, it was sort of destined to fucking happen. So fiery, emotional explosion. And so, you know, we kind of, we called it. And it's okay. And he's happy. He's happy with who he should be with right now.
So would he say the same thing?
Yeah, I think he would. I mean, I think he'll probably say, God, it's so hard being with Jen. But that's okay. It is.
And so can I also, having been through it myself, that's all. Can I also feel the distance thing with the kids?
Yeah.
It's well, he comes back. So he's on tour. I mean, the thing is with my ex, he's a child. He'd like never really grow up. So he's a fun dad, but he's sort of also away a lot touring.
