His dad, John Mangum Jr., was a defensive back for the Chicago Bears. Jake Mangum is the all-time hits leader in the SEC. At least he was when he left Mississippi State. I don't know if anybody's broken that, but he was the all-time hits leader. And he's only in his second year in the majors, even though in a couple days he's about to turn 30.
He's a late bloomer, and I want to ask him about his story because it's been a long road to get here, but I have a feeling that he is going to be a fan favorite. There was a video the other day of him taking a lead that looked like it was 30 yards long. He's a guy that Don Kelly said will do anything to win a baseball game. And I'm curious to hear more about his story. And here he is, Jake Mangum, one of the Pirates' newest players. Jake, how are you today, sir? Doing well, almost to the Blue Jays' spring training park. We got a game against the Blue Jays today on the road in a split squad. Beautiful. Well, I was just mentioning it's been a long road for you to get here. You know, my mom told me once that I was a late bloomer and she was proven correct.
I didn't have a full time job till I was 29. My radio career started 15 years ago when I was 44. Can you relate to this? Because you're about to turn 30 and you're just making your mark in the majors right now. Looks like it's all uphill from here. Oh, I mean, yeah, I've always kind of made the joke, you know, joking, not joking, late bloomer, late ager. So hope to stick around as long as they'll have me. And look, I love what I do for a living. I'm going to do this as long as I possibly can. Man, it's fun to watch you play the game. Don Kelly said yesterday you'll do anything to win a baseball game. But tell us about the road here, Jake, about how you got here. You were a great player at Mississippi State.
