Super Bowl 60 features a matchup of teams the Steelers played back in September. Beat one in New England. Lost to the other here in Pittsburgh, the Steelers' home opener, but a game they could have won if not for massive brain farts from Caleb Johnson and, to a lesser extent, Calvin Austin III. And so, two teams... That the Steelers would view, I think, as beatable.
Are going to play for a Lombardi trophy Sunday night. And I do think that does... I think that that is a big reason why they went with this plan this offseason. I was kind of surprised, actually...
I don't think it came up from Art because Art never did more of a season wrap-up press conference where it was just his thoughts on a lot of things because we just rushed right into Tomlin's resignation and then a head coach getting hired. But let's say if Art Rooney had been pressed to do a Q&A, I think that's one of the things that would have come up by him.
I don't think a Kabaly or a Hathorne would have brought it up, but I think he would have said, look, the two teams that played in the Super Bowl, we beat one and we could have beaten the other. So we're not that far off.
And I will concede as a guy that doesn't want Aaron Rodgers back, that is way more true and more accurate than it has been when, say, the Chiefs and Eagles played in the Super Bowl and both teams opened up a can of whoop-ass on the Steelers. So...

Chapter 2: What factors contributed to the Steelers' past performance against New England?
In that respect, they are closer, but I don't necessarily think next year is going to be like this year where we kind of have a random season where two good teams, but by no means great teams, are playing in the Super Bowl.
I think that you could look at beating the Patriots and understand that their roster was not a good roster last year, and they went 4-13 under Gerard Mayo, and then they flipped that 10 games different this year, and you could maybe squint and look at them and say, hey, we beat them. They have a quarterback, yes, that's a big part of it, but the rest of their roster is not overwhelming.
Now, I think they have been playing a lot better lately defensively, the Patriots. Vrabel started to get them, I think, pretty dialed in, especially in the playoffs. Pony? I think they're pretty far behind the Seahawks.
I understand that Sam Darnold being the quarterback of that football team makes it very hard to ever have the kind of belief you would about a Patrick Mahomes-led team or even Jalen Hurts with those Eagles because they were such a juggernaut. The Seahawks were third in the league in total defense this year. Or total offense. They were first in defense.
The Patriots are the second scoring offense and the fourth scoring defense. They also played an unbelievably easy schedule. I am aware of that. Still, though, the Steelers, who played a harder schedule, obviously, than New England, didn't really beat any of the good teams that they played, it turned out.

Chapter 3: How do the Steelers compare to the Seahawks and Patriots this season?
If you want to call Baltimore a good team, I guess you could squint, but they finished behind the Steelers and were a decidedly middle-of-the-pack group. as far as just rankings and virtually everything. They're also older than both of those teams, which is probably the biggest part of this for me. Art says we're not that far away.
Man, the defense that you still probably want to hang your hat on to some degree is counting on players who are 30 or older, which is just not really a sustainable recipe for success or a common recipe for success. Chris, I don't disagree with anything that you said there. How could I? The numbers are the numbers. This is where those teams rank. This is how old their players are.
This is what their quarterbacks have done. And this is what the Steelers' rankings are, their record, or their quarterback play. All that's right. But the thing that, I mean, the number one tiebreaker in all of sports is head-to-head. What happens when two teams play? How does the game look? The Steelers beat the team from the AFC that's in the Super Bowl, and they did it there.
And I know it was an outrageously weird game because New England turned the ball over five times. Yeah, they shot themselves in the foot. But the Steelers forced a lot of those turnovers. They weren't like balls of slippery piece of soap that just fell out of their hands.
They were scouting Ramondre Stevenson.
Sure. And they were lucky in the sense that they fell on the ball. And Stevenson's gone on to have a pretty good year. That was the worst game of his season as far as ball security. But hold on, though. We always talk about teams like this, and we do look at how they continue to play throughout the season. You don't just take, oh, if you beat a team in week one, they're the same team.
Very often, you don't even get the same team from week 17 if you see them in the playoffs.

Chapter 4: What is the current sentiment among Steelers fans towards the Patriots?
Yep. The Patriots clearly were a team that got better and better and better. Their low point was losing to the Steelers. They were 1-2. They lost to the freaking Raiders for crying out loud. And then their only loss since that entire for that entire time up until right now, depending on the outcome of this game, is a very close back and forth classic with the Bills where they lost by four.
So they clearly are a younger team that's getting better and better. Would you really say that the Steelers were getting better and better as the year wrapped up? They finished four and one, but they lost to the Browns. I know that. I get that. And the Raiders beat the Patriots in September too. And no one would say the Raiders last year were close to winning a championship.
The only reason why they might be is because they're getting a brand new head coach and the number one pick in the draft, which you get to cut the line when those things work out. I don't think they're that close for the record. But the results against these two teams do say otherwise. And if you're a Steelers fan who thinks actually...
We can be a competitive team that makes a run to the playoffs and then finally wins a game with a new head coach who's not Mike Tomlin. I hear what you're saying, but to me, it's not a very strong argument when both teams are on the field and the Steelers don't look like they're any worse than the Seahawks and Patriots. They really didn't. Here's another great unknown.
The league's been defined by Mahomes primarily for a while now. Are the Chiefs going to be down and be this version of themselves next year? Are the Bills going to, with a new head coach, by the way, are the Bills going to demonstrably be worse?
That's why I said I don't think that this year is producing a great team, which makes the Steelers getting blown out by Houston and having the same result to their season as the last few years even worse. Because this was a year, I think, where they could have possibly...
won games well I think are they not just done with the only I think art is saying like oh we're not as far away as people think I disagree with them too and I think that could be ultimate fool's gold Patriots are probably not gonna win 14 games next year but I bet they're gonna be even better because they're gonna have they're gonna still add a first round draft pick and more pieces to that team
The Bills, who knows, but they do have a new coach, so there could be a turning over of that. The Ravens have a new coach. Joe Burrow is, you would hope, if you're a football fan, maybe not so much an AFC North fan, not going to be hurt for part of the year. Jacksonville doesn't look like they're going anywhere.
Houston got some of the worst quarterback play in the playoffs you'll ever see, but they weren't dead and buried until... well after halftime against the Patriots. You know what I mean? There's reason to believe that a lot of these teams that were either down or showed some flaws, even if they made the playoffs, start patching up those flaws.

All good things happen in Buffalo, except to Buffalo teams. What a story that was, huh?
It just seems like there's so many great stories within the overarching story, Joe, that the Penguins are... a way better team than anybody anticipated. I mean, yeah, some of us even thought, okay, they're going to be so bad, I hope they're bad enough to get the top pick or something in the top three to five. Yeah. They came out the first month, looked like a really good hockey team.
The question was, could they sustain this? Yeah, they've evened out a little bit, but they're right there. And I think with the way that hockey works ā I'm not counting this squad out if they get into a playoff series. I think if you make it in hockey more so than any other sport, Joe, it feels like that's one where any team can win when they get in.
I agree. And among all the things happening with that team this year, all the good things, One of them is that they've, I hate to boil it down to a phrase like grown a pair, but they've found some guts and toughness that wasn't there.
And we had people like Bob Airy over the past several years and Jay Caulfield go on the air here and really question this team's, honestly, their lack of toughness and even heart at times in the context of whether or not they would defend Sid. And For the most part, whether it's Sid or the goalie getting hit or something like that, this team has shown that. And I really like that.
And one of my favorite Penguins this year is Connor Clifton. That guy hits people. That guy avenges people. That guy annoys people. I really like him. And there's others like him on this team that make it way tougher of a team to play against. That's all Sully would ever say.

We got to play hard to play against. We got to be hard to play against. Well, the fact of the matter is the Penguins were maybe the easiest team in the league to play against. I called them team polite over the past several years. The politest team in hockey. They're not polite anymore, man. It matters to Sid and to people to be protected like that, to your goalies.

So my personal favorite, I don't think ā it definitely wasn't the best game, but everybody remembers that first championship, that first win. Yeah. So, I mean, the first one for me, the first one that Austin got to witness at a young age, that's Super Bowl XL for me. I mean, I was 10. I'm entering peak fandom there at that point. I don't have a care in the world. You're in elementary school.
I was telling the guys yesterday, every ā Friday of that playoff run, the PA system at the school was blasting the Here We Go song by Roger Wood. Vibes were high. Black and gold Fridays. You put on your Steelers uniform. You took your terrible towel with you. Whatever it was. That run to the Super Bowl was so great. So great.
