I'm great. I'm excited. It's great to be back with you guys and preview this draft and really nail it down heading into the big day in Pittsburgh. So it's exciting always to see it in a new spot, especially I love it when it's going to these great NFL cities that don't get a Super Bowl and have such a historic fan base and franchises. So it's going to be a lot of fun.
Well, the big question here, the overriding question with this franchise, Charlie, is who's the next franchise quarterback? And a lot of people talking about Ty Simpson. Now, I don't know if I saw your most recent mock draft, but one of the recent ones I saw, you had Simpson going second overall to the Jets. Is that right?
Yeah, I've reached out to team sources and really heard a range of where they thought he would go because I trust team people more than myself, and they're the opinions that matter, not my own. When watching these players where they're grading them, that's what matters, and that's what I try and project and dig into. And so speaking with team guys, some of them thought he'd go mid first, a couple thought late, and some thought he would rise and go high and rise through the process because he has good tape. He's a great kid. He's going to interview well. And so I think, you know, just given the number of teams that need a quarterback, I I have a hard time seeing at this point that he'll slide too far.
But we'll see. Free agency is obviously going to have a big impact on some of the potential landing spots and teams filling their starting quarterback spot, like signing Malik Willis, for example. That'll take one off the board. But right now, there are other prospects. And if you need a starting quarterback, there's not other prospects in this draft. for the Jets and Cardinals to really pass on a guy that was given a starter grade so there's no Miles Garrett there's no Bosa brothers Aiden Hutchinson no Joe Waltz you know no Jamar Chase none of the prospects in this draft are in that league where you can say this guy is just too good and we're willing to you know potentially not draft a long-term starter at quarterback
Well, reading your Ty Simpson scouting report, you are really, really high on this guy. Is he ahead of Mendoza on your list? Or tell us more about what you think of Ty Simpson. Break him down for us.
Well, I have Mendoza ahead of him just because I think Mendoza is a little bit safer. You have a bigger sample size to do the work on him in terms of multiple years as a starter and multiple years of success and putting up points. and doing it with different systems and teammates and things like that. So he's a little safer, thus I give the nod to Mendoza. But I think Ty Simpson is very underrated right now nationally. I think he is an excellent quarterback. He put that Alabama team on his back and carried them into the playoffs. They couldn't run the ball worth a damn all season. When you look at how bad they ran the ball, it's shocking for Alabama and what we think of that program. Defensively, they did not have a team loaded with first-rounders at each position group on defense the way we became accustomed to them in the Saban years.
He put the team on his back. He didn't have great receivers. They were solid, but he carried them into the playoffs, made some incredible throws under pressure, really was just playing at a super high efficient level. Then late in the season, he had some injuries and kind of battled through it. They eventually get handled by Indiana along with everyone else. But I think he really showed a lot of grit.
