The Pomp And Joe Show

The Bechtold Breakdown - McCutchen meets with Nutting, Pitt lowers capacity

30 Jan 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.588 - 25.794 Joe

So Donnie, Football Friday on Pomp and Joe. Donnie and I enjoying ourselves thoroughly, as always, at Bowser's Chevy in Monroeville. Pretty big football game coming up next week. Quiz show coming up top of the hour in honor of that. I think it'll be a Steeler-related Super Bowl history quiz show. But first... We present to you the man, the myth, the legend, Austin City Sweeper Bechtold.

0

26.355 - 27.917 Joe

He has Bechtold's breakdown.

0

28.018 - 55.183 Donnie

Thank you, Joe. This Bechtold breakdown for January 30th on a Friday in 2026 begins with our man, somebody that you might consider a radio mentor to me, one that I do, Adam Crowley, breaking some news earlier today, Joe. Saying that Andrew McCutcheon and Bob Nutting had a meeting yesterday. I'm imagining to discuss McCutcheon's future. What do you make of that?

0

55.284 - 63.52 Donnie

And do you think that Nutting is going to step in and basically say Ben Charrington, give him one more year, he's going to be on the roster? That's what I think is going to happen.

0

64.382 - 89.352 Joe

That's my fear. I mean... If that is the case, haven't they been through enough PR gaffes that would be way worse than this? Like, are they afraid that there would be a fan revolt at this point? I think the opinion is probably mixed on McCutcheon. Everybody loves him. That's not a mixed opinion, but... At this point in his career, there have to be better options at DH.

90.073 - 115.776 Joe

The only thing in my view that they really owed or owe Andrew McCutcheon is to tell him if they're moving on. And they should be moving on. But man, that sounds like the potential is there for Bob Nutting to step in and say, like the old Mike Tomlin thing, you'll decide how long you're staying here. I don't know if that should be how it works in this situation.

116.178 - 120.538 Austin Bechtold

I think the Pirates would be surprised, the front office, that is.

Chapter 2: What news did Andrew McCutchen and Bob Nutting discuss?

120.94 - 139.297 Austin Bechtold

that if they don't bring back Andrew McCutcheon, it won't be like some heartbreaker across the fan base. Yeah. I mean, maybe some people, sure, but it won't be like an overwhelming, I can't believe these guys, they didn't bring back Andrew McCutcheon. We got three years of the reunion tour, okay?

0

139.917 - 158.644 Austin Bechtold

And I get when bands do that, you know, I think the Rolling Stones have been on their last reunion tour since like the year I was born, and here we are 30 years later, and they're still rolling. I don't think people would really be all that upset if Kutch doesn't come back. I agree.

0

159.446 - 182.044 Austin Bechtold

For somebody at his age, sure, putting up okay-slash-decent numbers, somebody in his late 30s, really, really close to retirement, But that's not really what the Pirates need. I mean, if he wants to come back as some dude that's going to be on the bench a lot, fill in as a DH, maybe play a game or two out in the field, that's one thing.

0

182.324 - 197.522 Austin Bechtold

They should not have him as some sort of priority of, hey, we're bringing Kutch back again. He's going to be back in the lineup every day or as many days as he possibly can. He should not be viewed as a starter. And I also think there's a little bit of...

0

197.502 - 222.548 Austin Bechtold

I don't know if it's McCutcheon himself maybe overvaluing because I did think Jason said something interesting to the guys yesterday that teams that are contenders right now probably aren't reaching out to Andrew McCutcheon because the thought is why doesn't Cutch want to perhaps chase a ring? You know, maybe this last season, why not give himself a shot at a World Series?

223.743 - 231.102 Austin Bechtold

I don't think those teams that are truly contenders in Major League Baseball are thinking that Andrew McCutcheon is their missing piece.

231.744 - 235.373 Joe

I agree with you, but I think the city game doesn't. City game?

235.741 - 254.568 Donnie

I would be very upset if Andrew McCutcheon was not a part of this year's team. Maybe that's a little bit of an over-exaggeration, but I still think there is a role for him as a right-handed bat, as a DH, against left-handed pitching. They're a very left-handed hitting lineup with Cruz.

Chapter 3: What are the implications of McCutchen potentially returning to the Pirates?

254.908 - 257.392 Donnie

They brought in O'Hearn, Brandon Lau.

0

257.913 - 260.196 Joe

O'Hearn has reverse splits limits.

0

260.53 - 277.965 Donnie

I know that. He's still a left-handed hitter, which is what I said. And Brian Reynolds, who's a switch hitter. So, I think that McCutcheon is valuable in spots. You're not going to start him every day. He should not be your everyday DH. I'm not saying that. But against lefties in late-game situations, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th inning...

0

277.945 - 294.857 Donnie

I think he could still be used as a pinch hitter, and I still think that that last spot on the bench, maybe we're overvaluing how much that guy is truly going to be used in a DH lineup because I think we've seen over the past years that that last guy is not utilized as much as people might think.

0

295.343 - 318.027 Donnie

So you also pointed something to my attention, Joe, about what Keith Law had to say about Connor Griffin. So, of course, Keith Law made Connor Griffin the number one prospect on his list for the Athletic, saying he's the most exciting prospect we've had in the minors since Mike Trout. I think he's going to end up as one of the best players in baseball once he's established.

318.508 - 325.907 Donnie

But Joe, you can fill us in a little bit more. Keith Lodge says something that this could be an Otani on the Angels-like situation.

326.782 - 349.8 Joe

Well, the news here is that Keith Law has moved the Pirates farm system up to number four in all of baseball and says they're building the Sistine Chapel. That's what he said. And, of course, it begins with Connor Griffin. So the question is, here's the other thing, though, that Keith Law said, is that he warns against bringing him north from Bradenton.

350.341 - 353.025 Joe

I want to see him come up right away, don't you guys?

353.242 - 377.392 Austin Bechtold

I would like that move. I think it would be pretty bold, and I also think it could absolutely pay off. I think they... They kind of, I don't know if I'd say wasted his time. They should have had him actually getting some at-bats in AAA last year. Late in the season, I get that. But at least let him get a little bit of time there. He was tearing the cover off the baseball every step of the way.

Chapter 4: How do fans feel about Andrew McCutchen's career at this point?

419.441 - 430.853 Joe

I'd rather maximize the Paul Skeens era, which who knows how many years we have left starting now. This year is critical, and I don't care about 2000 and what.

0

430.833 - 434.737 Donnie

Well, if you say that now, in a couple of years, we will.

0

435.278 - 439.342 Joe

We're already having that conversation. Yes, we will. We're already having that conversation with Skeens.

0

439.422 - 442.206 Donnie

We're already saying, oh, well, there's just four years left of Paul Skeens.

0

442.446 - 452.597 Joe

Right, which is why he needed to maximize it while he was here, and that's still the case. So call this kid up. Have him in the lineup if he's the best option from day one.

452.817 - 459.945 Austin Bechtold

I disagree, Donnie. We also have a lockout looming in 2027, which is something fair to consider.

460.837 - 461.257 Joe

I know.

461.418 - 463.42 Austin Bechtold

I know we do.

463.48 - 487.266 Donnie

Maximize the present. That's what I'd do. Next. Donnie, what do you think of Pitt dropping its game day capacity at Accresure Stadium down by 17,000? It's basically around a 20-25% decrease in the seats. They're taking away the east and west ends of the stadium, trying to make for a more intimate environment.
