Chapter 1: Why did the Pittsburgh Steelers hire Mike McCarthy as their new head coach?
Bob, I was thrown off by the music here. I didn't know it was the start of the show. Neither did I. We were talking in here and we forgot what time it was. What time is it? It's game time.
We were talking about the weather and all its permutations and effects. I don't know how I got here today. Yes, I do. Limits and his wonderful father drove me. They picked me up.
I didn't know if I was going to get here. Call him now. He'll be there. How did you get here? How'd you get out of your driveway? It's just plowing. I don't even know. And now I got to go back and go somehow get back in, change, and go in to do TV tonight. So I got to figure out how to do it. But I am not, you know, I have hard stuff going on. I'm not going to be a hero out there.
Yeah, hard stuff you have going on. I know you do. And you got to be careful about that. I did all my shoveling last night. And then the plow came and he's just doing his job, right? But then the plow came and then the whole front of the driveway was covered with what amounted to a 10-foot wall, Bob. I know. You know what I did at that point?
I threw away the shovel and I just started crashing into this wall of snow to break it down. Like I was Bob Spillane against Derrick Henry at the goal line. It was actually fun.
I understand those guys. Where are you going to put it?

Well, our neighbor is awesome. Mark has a plow. I'll pay him $100 to get my daughter's car out. He plows ours, he plows his, and he plows a couple other people in the block where his family lives. And he probably plowed it three times, including once this morning, like right before we were about to leave, which was great. And it took a lot of digging out.
But thankfully, my dad is a huge car, a four-wheel drive car. Mine is not. I probably wouldn't have made it.
Here's my little advice for people who do have four-wheel drive. And I understand it's important to have. But that does not mean you have to speed. Coming over here today, there are a couple people who I think had that thought, well, I'm on a four-wheel drive. I can do what I want. It will not help you stop.
When you put on brakes, that four-wheel drive does not matter, and there's still roads out there you got to watch out for.
Is that a fact limit? Was Bob factual in that observation? Four-wheel drive doesn't make you stop. You're going to get a lot of four-wheel drivers texting you right now at 412-928-9370.
I'm just saying, if you go at a higher rate of speed when you slam on the brakes, I don't think it makes a difference. I don't think it ā four-wheel drive helps you get up things and helps you do what you got to do that way, but ā It definitely helps with traction. It does, but it won't help you stop if you slam it on. That's what I think.

All I see on their playoff history is 2016 they had two and 2015 they had one. So count them up, Bob. 11 through 25 is 15 years. You're right. You're right.
So let me repeat the fact because it's so unbelievable that I keep thinking I'm wrong.
Especially since they had to go through back-to-back bad seasons and then they're right back to where they were when Brady was here. The New England Patriots.

I mean, I'm not sure why you waste a year of your life not trying to contend. Obviously, your roster is what it is every year. It changes every year. And so you deal with what you have every year and try to put yourself in position to compete every year. And sometimes you have the horses, sometimes you don't. But I think you try every year. I know why, Bob.
You waste a year of your life to get a quarterback.

That's why you do it. Now, did the Patriots intentionally go 3-14? I don't remember the mechanics of that. Maybe they got there organically. Great. Good for them. They got Drake May from a 3-14 season. If you're unable to get there organically, And you have three playoff wins in the past 15 years and none in the last nine. And you go 10-8 every year and get blown out of the wildcard round.
If you can't get to that place organically, then you need to make it happen. And he never made it happen. And they're still running in place. And here comes Mike McCarthy, another Mike who can't win playoff games. And that brings us to our reaction. A reaction Monday. The Steelers have a new coach.

Chapter 8: What are fans' reactions to the hiring of Mike McCarthy?
Bob, the floor is yours. Do you like the hire?
Well, first let me say I have a lot of respect for Mike McCarthy and what he's done. And he is an offensive guy. But I thought they were going to go through the process, which to me meant meeting with Chris Shula, with Nate Sheilhaus, with anyone else who they've had on their list. You should say Sheilhas. Sheilhas or Steelhas if he comes here as an OC. Who knows? But...
I would have thought they did that for the simple reason that back when Mike Tomlin was hired, he was the guy who could have been Nate Sheilhaus. They could have waited all the way and interviewed him, and then they said they were blown away. Well, you're reducing any chance of having a blown away conversation with Shula or Sheilhaus, right? So I would have thought they'd go through that process.
If at the end they make this decision, okay, they went through the process. But they didn't even go through the process. That was my one disappointment thought. As far as Mike McCarthy is concerned, I do note that a lot of us were talking about offensive needs. They have to get better offensively, think better, do things differently. Well, he does do that.
I mean, he went to Dallas, and they still had two of the top scoring seasons in the NFL, number one in each of those years when it came to scoring points. He knows what he's doing offensively, and he does have the reputation of developing quarterbacks. So from that point of view, that's fine. But also, you have to consider the postseason.
What he's not been able to do is the same hurdle that Mike Tomlin has gone through. So at this point, I'm going to say it's okay. I would have preferred them waiting for the other guys. But I also know that some of these guys might be here anyway as part of his coaching staff. I think as important as him and getting the job, it's what he brings in. And if they're really good coaches,
coordinators, specifically, who can elevate themselves to getting head jobs themselves down the road. You could still end up, and I know it's unlikely, but Sheilhaus could still come here as a guy who is going to learn under Mike McCarthy and then leave at some point to be a head coach.
You still can get the guy from Miami, Anthony Weaver, who apparently they were impressed with as a defensive coordinator. There still is the thought you can get Jim Schwartz, maybe, a guy who is in Cleveland and regarded as one of the best defensive guys. It's important not so much to get 30 coaches. It's important to get the best ones you could find.
That's where I think the next step has to be in whatever they decide to do. But as far as McCarthy, he is what he is. He's a proven winner, especially early in his career, not so much recently, but he is an offensive mind. And I think a lot of people...
